It has a heavy duty Chevy rear end. I have been told it takes away about 70 HP.

Anyone else heard this? I am thinking about swapping this out for a Chevy 12 bolt.
the rear in these trucks are the 9.5" 14 bolt and are tough as nails!! it may take a lil more power to turn it, but id never swap it for a 12 bolt. my engine is a very mild 461 and pulls 441/530 at the tire on motor, so it cant be killing them too bad

I agreed completely with Jamie. The 9.5" axles are huge and the alxe housing is stout. Stronger than a 12-bolt. Spend your money instead upgrading the differential. I'm a fan of the classic Eaton Posi but there are equally robust alternatives available for the 9.5" 14-bolt.
I know a guy with a 9.5" rear under a Tahoe powered by a Ramjet 502 with a 250 shot on top of it. The rear end held up with an Eaton Posi but he was just starting to see oil weeping around the cover - that is a sign the housing is flexing and actually walking the cover bolts out. He didn't have a cast diff cover or trusses, just to show what these things will take even under a 3 ton Tahoe.

I also have had a few ss454 trucks and can't seem to give up on them. My current package is also my favorite,it's a 10 to 1 alluminum head 496 from skip white performance and can't say enough good things about the bang for the bucks.my truck has been tubbed and has a ladder bar with coil overs. My slicks measure 13" wide on a 12" rim with no clearance issues.I also changed my front spindles to SS impala style so I could run a aero space racing disc setup front and rear .the truck runs 10.70's in motor at 122 with a 1.42 60' and last week I sprayed a 150 shot but had to lift at about 1000' because it started to go lean and still ran a 10.07@123 with a 1.39 60'
So my point is as good as the new L S motors with turbos are the BBC will still move that big tank down the road pretty good,I look forward to your progress and good luck!

Thanks.... I am looking more for a good streetable truck than I am something to race.

We did have this truck on the track when it was new, but it did not run very well. Fully stock was over 15 secs.

You have done a great job getting all that power to the ground. We have a similar rear suspension set up and it sounds like it is doing the job for you.

It is a 14 bolt chevy.....

I did use a 9 inch when I built my Chevelle, but the rear end at that time was a 10 bolt so it was never going to work.

I am going with the 14 bolt and using the money somewhere else.
