Supercharger for towing or cam & headers
#13
I put 4.56s in mine this summer... I was trying to make up for the super high first grear of the 4l80 transmission. I'm running 285/60/18 tires=31.5". I drive it empty to the next town and back (rural driving) and got 15.3 mpg driving it easy. If you get into the boost, it will drop.... I can tell you this, the first time I pulled my boat I had to pull out into traffic so I had to accelerate kind of hard..... I found or that it will burn the tires pretty easy while pulling the trailer.. And that was from a roll.

I have a 2500 suburban L96/6L90 with a TVS1900, I tow year round with it and if you are looking for improved mileage don't do it. I get around 8mpg towing 5-6k and can get 13mpg on the highway(no trailer). Currently I am looking at ways to get more out of it, thinking a cam is in my future along with opening up the exhaust, truck is reg'ed in CT and smog here is getting to be like Cali so LT's/y-pipe is very questionable. Currently run a 285/60-20(33.5") tire with 3.73 gears going to 4.33-ish gears to help with tire size. I know that the potential for the motor is great, just need to make a plan...or do a dmax swap.

Yep... There's no way around it... Towing with a 6.0 will use gas.. I was actually surprised mine didn't get worse than it is. You can up the power to make it tow easier but the milage status pretty much the same or a little worse. If you want great milage with effortless towing the diesel shines... I'm just really not a diesel guy. My truck only gets out of the garage in the summer months and gets parked in the winter. It's not my daily driver so if it uses a little more gas than stock, it's worth it to me. Towing my body I get 12ish. Plus don't forget, when boosted you should be running premium.

The header install was a success. Going tomorrow to the muffler shop for the rest of the exhaust. I installed the headers at work and had to drive home 45 miles with open headers... Needless to say it was loud!

I've towed quite a bit with a diesel and there really is no comparison. Have a '03 Dmax with a clean 100hp tune on it and it does get 20-22mpg on the highway and a solid 15mpg with 6k in tow. Use my suburban to tow when I have the whole family with me, threw the tvs on it to make it a bit better.

I think the other thing that gives a misconseption of milage is how people tow... Most people just say "while towing it gets XX mpg".
If you tow 6000 lbs at 55 to 60 in rural areas your mileage will be way different than towing 6000 lbs at 80+ on the interstate. Plus elevation... High winds in certain areas... I've had my milage be 3+ mpg different going on a trip south because on the way back home I was driving into a 35 mph headwind. Same load each way.
