For those that haven't visited the build thread over on Ck5, he got it installed and running so for the question "Possible to swap an 8.1L into a GMT900 truck?" the answer is now yes.

The question now is trans tune. it has hard 1-2 shift and some funky 2-3 shifts under certain parameters, I can grandpa drive around but the upshifts under high load/power tends to slip. Hopefully have this sorted out later this week.
engine tune was easy, its bigger so it needs more fuel.
You're welcome internet

sorry to resurrect this again, but I'm interested in the same exact deal, for all the reasons the OP listed, with 1 additional thought.
I feel like I really need a 6sp but want to stick with a chevy trans rather than the Allison, or I'd probably scour the net for an older model
with an 8.1 (02 to 07) or so and call it good. For my needs, the older body style in and of itself would work just fine.
In speaking to several folks that have had both the 8.1 in suburbans and in the 2500HD, one thing I heard is that they felt they got better MPG with the
suburbans than the did with their pickups, and really couldn't say why.
A transmission mech I visited with, stated "well that's really simple, the Allison which came with the 8.1 in the pickup version requires a
higher amount of HP to operate than the chevy tranny's, which was used in the Suburbans. "
His thought being that the power consumption of the Allison compared to the 4l80 should translate into a little better fuel economy, which would tie in with
what the owners were saying (albeit anecdotally.)
hopefully someone with some serious transmission knowledge can chime in and debunk or concur with this?
thanks,
