new 8 lug wheels on older truck?

the search is beating me down. im sure there are 100 threads about it. all i know is the pattern is different. can you machine the wheels to fit an older model?

in need of tires and i can buy 2012 take offs with michelins cheaper than just tires from the dealer.

thanks.

I got those 11-12 20's on my 07 sierra hd
I just got some 8 lug to 8 lug adapters.

I am not sure about the 8 lugs but I redrilled my axles and rotors from the truck pattern of 5 on 5" to passenger pattern of 5 on 4.75".

do you have any pictures? seems like by the time you add an adapter the wheel would stick out too far?

those look real nice, but im thinking of the multispoke gmc wheel. the wheels i was going to buy ended up getting sold before i could get them, but got a sweet deal on some tires so im still in good shape. my factory aluminum wheels look great, i was just searching for a deal.

those 5 spokes are super nice too. makes the new body style truck, IMO. the older HD wheels with the newer centercaps dont look good on those trucks

Any other pics of the HD wheels? Id like something NBS as well but to be honest havent paid much attention to what they have on them. I had the tahoe 20s on my K1500 but they wont fit on my HD :bang:

00Z71 11-27-2012 09:50 PM

The 11-12 have a wider track, so when you install the wheels on older models with spacers, they end up right where they need to be

Whipped383 11-28-2012 09:20 AM

So the offset is different? Any info/pics on the spacers?

barbaramoori 12-05-2012 06:39 AM

How about the bolt pattern?

TJ 12-05-2012 06:42 PM

gm changed the pattern from 8x165(8x6.5 the forever standard 8 lug pattern till now) to 8x170 to increase towing capacity..... which makes no sense.

a new 1/2 ton 6 lug truck is rated to tow more than my 3/4 ton with 8 lugs.
strange.

thunder550 12-05-2012 07:02 PM

I think the new ones are 8x180, not 8x170.

TJ 12-05-2012 08:40 PM

they are 180. i was thinking ford. wanted to put some ford 20's on my truck but they dont fit either. i know a guy who drilled out ford wheels and put them on chevy. look pretty good. not sure how safe it was but he drove from florida to arizona on business and towed several times. i do not recommend this, just making comment.

I put some 2012 HD wheels on my '04 HD a few weeks ago and really like how they turned out. I got the adapters from eBay for $175 shipped. Tires are 275/65/20 which measure out to around a 34.5x11. I'd really like to upgrade to a nice set of M/T's next...

My 08 LMM on LML wheels. No need to have an ugly tow pig. Even with adapters it doesn't stick out at all in the rear, and barely if any in the front.

1BadAction 06-03-2013 10:37 AM

I'm torn on doing late model wheels or not after I paint the Suburban. I want to go to adapters in the rear to even out the track width anyways, wouldn't be much harder to use thicker ones in the back over the 1.5s it would take to widen the track to the same as the front.
