Default Any E85 8.1 guys?

Have an 01 8.1L with ported intake, BP203 cam, and fresh rebuild in my 85 K20 backed with a built TH475. Blackbear tuned. Anyone that knows these trucks know they LOVE KR. I however hate KR. I can see where E85 will benefit me in many ways such as lower IAT's, KR, and octane. My only issue is Im a noob on the e85 ****. I know enough that is never the same consistency but how much does that really matter? I have the stuff available at plenty of fuel stations close by. I would not run it in the winter more than likely as the truck doesnt get used much in winter. Fuel lines are all set up for it and I know I will need more injector. Already need that anyways after seeing 130% IDC...lol. I have no idea what the blends are in summer around Columbus, Ohio but will start checking in a month or so.

Is it really as hard as everyone makes it out to be or can you leave a few degrees of timing on the table and make more than I do now and still not worry about blowing a hole in the pistons. Also if anyone know a great dyno tuner around here familiar with e85 shout it out. Have talked to Eric but never asked about e85.

In general for NA stuff there isnt an advantage unless you have super high compression that would normally be race gas only. I could only imagine the gas mileage you would get with e85 and an 8.1, probably like 5mpg

Hell Id be happy with 5.....lol. This isnt a daily by any means and is performance oriented. Im not looking really for huge gains in hp or anything but rather calming the knock retard and high intake air temps so the pcm can stop pulling so much timing while in knock retard. Up to 5*. Id like to have that back so its more consistent. Its weird on these engines cause it shows up to run amazing one day and the next its just like well Im here.

I just want to know where would you tune for as far as the E% goes? And get feedback form people that dont have the E content sensor and run E85. Are you constantly chasing your tune or just leave it be? I realize for racing you would be chasing but what about just a street ride?

It wont help intake temps, but it is more resistant to temperature, so you will basically decrease the timing the computer pulls with any deteced knock. Honestly you could probably turn off the knock sensors if its stock compression on E85. I would get a tester and see what your percentage is locally and tune it for that and check as needed, The tuning window with e85 is much larger than gas.

A friend of mine did a segment swap on his 03 GMC and runs a flex fuel sensor. It's pretty slick!

It's possible to run a flex sensor on that truck, I believe he'd just have to flash to a 2002 Tahoe OS because that is the only P01 operating system that offered flex fuel. The rest would be just copy/paste the engine tune in and doing a segment swap for the 4L80e transmission. I assume that OS allows for a 80e segment swap. If you can't tune yourself, this may be somewhat hard to look further into.

In the event that you can segment swap it, let me know.

I have a bastard FF OS that I couldn’t swap and I found someone on HPT that did it for me for $50.

I still don’t know how he did it though.

I’d be glad to pass along his email address.

Probably done with better software and then read out in HPT
