Stock air box VS cold air intake

Stock air box VS cold air intake
I recently sold my K&N cold air intake because of heat soak from the metal heat shield being bolted to the MAF
So should i buy a different brand cold air intake or modify the stock box install a drop in K&N filter with a piece of pipe going to the throttle body
I started cutting the box and it can be made free flowing with the filter getting plenty air just like my old setup
I feel i can make this work just as good as a cold air intake kit
Anybody test this or have opinions?

I wouldn't have sold a cold air kit due to heat soak.. Heat soak happens more so when you shut the truck off, let it sit, rather then driving it.. Still better then the stock set up..

i know running a smooth pipe to the stock air box, running a drop in k&n, and cutting out the bottom of the box has been proven to have colder iat's then most cai's, but idk if anyones noticed any hp gains doing that...i wish i wouldve done this on my truck before i bought my cai, i just didnt know about it....

I could drive 15 to 20 minutes threw town red light to red light stop touch the heat shield it will burn you....could not hold your hand to it
I went over all parts of the coldair intake with a temp gun to find my hot spot

Something doesn't sound right about that. If your underhood temps are that high in general, there is more problems with heat than just the tube and shield. I had the same kit before I put the turbo on, never ever had a problem remotely close to that.

I went from a modified stock airbox with drop in K&N to a true flow intake and gained a little, then went to the plastic tubed K&N FIPK with heatshield and saw even better gains.I will keep my k&N.
