Default Vortex Optics?

VORTEX OPTICS STRIKEFIRE RED DOT SCOPE FOR AR15 @ Sportsmans Outdoor Superstore:

Are these decent, or junk? Would be going on my Sig 556.

Id pass..

Vortex makes decent optics. The PST and Razor line are good. The new Razor Gen 2 is suppose to be REALLY good. Typically optics like that are subcontracted out.

If I where you id look for a 1-8x scope and call it good. I think red dot scopes are over rated. I told my buddy that last year when he bought a Eotech, he just bought a regular Nikon for it 2 weeks ago.

Red-dots really shine when doing house to house fighting drills. Anything over 300 yards though and it's better to have a good scope or a set of irons. If you're dead set on having the fast draw first round capability but you still want to be able to shoot accurately to 600+, it would be hard to argue with a Trijicon ACOG or similar.

But is a 5.56 really any good past 300 yds?? I really haven't tried shooting anything long range with it.

Keep the suggestions coming guys. I mostly use this rifle for varmints and target plinking.

Oh hell yes! 77gr Sierra Matchings will get you easily to 600 yards in a AR15 platform even the 69gr will do that

The guys shooting .223AI and 75gr Amax (which cant be magazine fed) too long of a bullet, shoot to 1000 yards on calm days

This stuff is my passion and I keep up on it very closely. I love long range shooting.

First im not really crazy about poly tipped bullets in AR platform rifles. AR15 can tear some brass up from time and with feeding ramps etc, im afraid the tip could become damaged and affect accuracy. Depending on rate of twist I really like the 69gr Sierra matchking and RL15 is excellent powder for the .223.

My suggestion is a Nikon M223 3-12
M-223 3-12x42SF with BDC 600 Reticle from Nikon

I own one and really like it. I've had it mounted on slug guns and now sits atop my AR15 rifle. Gives a nice low power and a decent upper for those longer shots. For predators dial it 1.5" high at 100 yards and zero the turent. Then use Microsoft word and make little yardage idicators using very small font. Shoot it at 200,250-300-350 and 400 yards all marking the turent. Most of the time coyotes come within 75-150 yards so it will be a point and shoot.

Good glass, strong and reliable, That price is also very high you can find them at other place much cheeper

Well Marines in Afghanistan are engaging out to 600-800 yards with the 16a4, so yes it's effective past 300 yards. Effective on what is the real question. By standards, humans are easy to kill. Deer and other such game would limit its effectiveness to around 300 yards with proper bullet placement and selection. Good luck with your choice man.

Thanks for the input guys, I do appreciate it. That Nikon looks pretty sweet, but it's more than I want to spend right now. I've got a house to renovate...

Is there a more budget friendly "intermediate" optic that you can recommend? Something that I can resell in a couple years or so without losing my *** completely when I want to buy something higher end?
