I don't know if MXScan works on those years but this is what the Help File says in the Introduction - "MXScan is a OBDII data logging application for 1996+ GM Vehicles. It is designed to help you in troubleshooting and tuning your vehicle. If you have any product suggestions please feel free to email us via our support@monodax.com email address."

I know for a fact that MXScan does NOT at this time work with the 1996-97 Vortec 305/350/454 engined trucks. The creators of MXSCan are working on this. and have been so for the last year or so. Monodax is 1 person show, he doesnt do this for the money. he does so after his full time job. The 96-97's use a different language than the 98+ trucks do.

You can still get Tunercats so long as you buy it as part of the Roadrunner PCM emulators from Moates .net.
$80 per defintion files allows for unlimited number of vehicles that can be tuned for that year. Vortec trucks are from years 96-97 and 98-00. I can tune 10,000,000 96-97 trucks if I wanted, for only $80. To tune the 98-00 trucks I woudl have to pay $80. With teh JEt tuner, you only can tune 4 PCMs.
The Westers GMY IS a rebadged Tunercats. With MUCHO doesel coverage files.

Are you just trying to delete the cats?
::meow::
IF so just put the rear O2's to free air.
mount to the frame or trans.
No special tuning required.
I can take pictures if you like

First - there is nothing wrong with TunerCATs. I have been using it for years and find it to provide the means to do everything I want to.
As for removing the catalytic converters from a L29, I recommend that you do NOT do that. The stock heads are unique in that they actually flow more exhaust than they do intake. This is pratically unheard of for any other head. Because of this you need some backpressure to maintain good torque levels. An open unrestrictive exhaust would absolutely kill a stock Vortec 454.
I can tell you right off that if you change to a 180-degree thermostat and run 89 octane or better fuel in it, WOT timing advance (from 2000RPM up) can be bumped from 12 degrees to 24. That is a HUGE increase for any engine.

1996 7.4L K2500 Suburban
Hello everyone!
Brand new to the forum, and was wondering if I could resurrect an old topic on here I found doing a google search...
I have a 1996 K2500 Suburban, 7.4L. I plan on installing headers on the truck, but it's a lot more cost effective to purchase a set of headers that do not have the EGR provision... I could just get a fitting a weld in a fitting.
But along with the new headers would most likely be shorties with a y-pipe for single exhaust and a cat delete. So I was investigating a program to delete the EGR and the sensors after the cats.
I have limited knowledge of Tunercats, with a programmer for my LT1 cars (94-95 cars).
SO I was wondering what might be suggested for my 1996 Suburban 7.4L...
also a plan is in the works for an engine swap in my brothers 99 K1500 Suburban... we are planning to retrofit a 6.0L with a 4L60E. A 2003 (not sure of the year) Chevrolet Express is the engine and wire harness donor.
A program, hardware and software that could be used for both of these vehicles (and more) would be great to know about!
I look forward to hearing what y'all have to say!

The only thing that will tune 96-97 Vortec Trucks is Tunercat OBD2 (not the same TC used on 94-95 LT1 cars) which was sold to Jet and is now being sold as the Jet Dynamic Spectrum Tuner. So you can buy that or look for someone selling a used TC OBD2. There is still one way to buy a new TC OBD2 at a higher cost and that is to buy it with a Roadrunner PCM from Moates. You can use JET/TC OBD2 on the 99 also although HP Tuners would or EFI Live could be used on it also. JET/TC OBD2 is the only thing that will do both. You don't get a scanner but you can buy a cheap ELM 327 cable on Amazon that will come with several adequate scanner programs but will not be as nice as a HP Tuners scanner.
