Default Rear View Temp Gauge Modification

Alright so I'm sitting at work here and a thought crossed my mind.

We all have the ambient temp sensors infront of our radiators. I am assuming these operate on a 0-5v range.

Would it not be possible to swap out that sensor with a water proof one that could be installed into your HEX and thus display HEX coolant temp on your rear view mirror?

You could possibly also use this for trans or other temps too?? I know the screen can display up to 199.

Just thinking out loud here...

Whats a HEX?. You could either drop the same sensor directly into coolant depending on how hot it runs or you could butcher a trans oil temp sensor and it would read correctly also.

Would be neat.

GM did something similar "kinda" when they built the W-Body Grand Prix's. If you had the dual climate control with LCD screen you could enter the "diag" mode or whatever it was called and it would show different engine related parameters in the HVAC display. Anything from coolant temp to transmission temp I think and even the vehicle speed too, I know it did others but I forget and would have to find the list again. Ramble ramble...lol

I think you would want the IAT value, post rotors. That's where the air is the hottest and what you need/want to know for tuning.

The water temp in the HEX path is nice and it would kinda give you an idea of want the cooling system is doing/not doing.

If you haven't already, do the rear crossover tube on the heads.

I may give this a whirl, seems like a fun experiment. Might go for trans temp..

I looked at my trans temp 1 time and never gave it a 2nd thought. It never got above 160. I do log it but it's not something I'm overly concerned about.

The dwell time is slow, so I think HEX, trans or even diffs would be a good bet. IAT changes too fast and the dwell time in the mirror cant be changed.
