Default Engine dying, unsure what to check next

Hey guys, I have a 2002 with blackbear tuning on it, running a mild cam and headers. I recently rebuilt the trans, added a 2400 stall converter, and 4.56 gears. Since a little after that time I have noticed when in reverse the engine will lug down and start surging badly or completely die sometimes.

More recently it has started dying going forwards sometimes too, or when changing R-F-R maneuvering in a parking lot. I've never driven any other stalled vehicle and am not sure if this is a converter related issue or a tuning/sensor issue. Truck has 175k miles now, I just changed the spark plugs last week, no change in the condition. Map sensor and 02 sensors were replaced a few years ago, however the truck seems to run rich to me (Smokes pretty good at WOT pulls). Just looking for help or ideas as I am at a loss why it keeps dying on me.

Without seeing a log its hard to tell, but when is the last time you replaced the O2 sensors? Might want to start there, clean the MAF, clean the TB.

02's would be my guess too.

I'm gonna guess it's been about 2 years and maybe 40k miles on these O2 sensors, any preferred brand? I have ngk in right now

And I clean my throttle body and maf everytime I changed the air filter, every 2--3 oil changes, using the correct maf cleaner.

Edit: I would have to get the V2 back from my friend to be able to log it's condition, or I also have access to a snap on Solus scanner too, if that would be helpful.

It might be helpful to see what the Fuel Trims are doing if you can see that with your scanner. Also IAC position, and timing.

I went with Denso's. Was anything changed besides trans and stall? Tune?

Yes after the trans and gear swap I had Justin update the tune to correct my shift points and speedo. I thought the IAC might be not working so i grabbed another from the junkyard but they both function.

I may grab some O2 sensors from the parts store and throw them in this weekend. Then Im going go try and get a data log of the truck and hopefully reproduce its dying issue.

It sounds like the airflow tables. You can ask him to adust them, but I doubt he will. I had the same issue when I used him before learning to tune, and he couldn't fix it. A new tuner could do it if he can't.

Don't see why they wouldn't adjust but if that's the case and you are gonna switch tuners, I'd recommend Atomic. He'll get you straightened out!
