I have an idea, but I thought I would get an opinion on it before I pursue it.
There is a very LARGE black guy here in town that is a refuge from Louisiana. He is retired, but since he lost everything in the flooding, he bounces between yard sales and pedals what he buys around town to make ends meet. He drives a pretty nice new holland lawn mower every where he goes (small town TN). We have gotten to be freinds over the last year and a half. He comes in to chat and shoot the bull. He even ran a guy off that was trying to rob us about 2 weeks ago.
OK, here is my thought.
I was thinking about buying a lawn mower trailer. Paint it to match his mower and put raised side panels on it. Then take the trailer to my sign guy and have my company information put on it, and get a couple other small business's to put their information on it as well. Then let him pull the trailer around behind him while he is bouncing between yard sales and doing his peddling.
What are your thoughts on this? He is seen all over town, but would it look bad on my business to be advertising on the side of a mower trailer? What would your first thought be if you saw this?
My thoughts is it would be like the corner sign holders standing all over the place, except one guy would be very mobile, but traveling slow enough the sign can be seen.
Be honest and blunt, not going to hurt my feelings.
Its almost taking advantage of him. but what the heck, give it a try!!
Initially I would have him do it as an experiment to see if it would pan out. Then from there, figure some sort of reimbursement for it. Since he is retired, he can only have so much outside income, so whatever I paid him would have to be small.
I mentioned it to him. He seemed excited at the prospect.
I don't think it's to bad of an idea but remember he is now also the face of your business. Everyone is going to associate every encounter with how you run your operation and how customers are treated. If he is a cool, nice and honest dude that just had some bad luck but is well liked in the community I say give it a swing. I would just hate to have you get negative feedback or impressions based on something you didn't do but he did.
Pics of mower??

Do it. You won't lose business over it, or even have anyone associate your business with the demeanor of the guy advertising. It's putting your name out there. If I go watch a boat race, air show, or opera play, and Coca-Cola sponsors it, that says nothing about Coke's product(s) or the way they conduct business, even if I hate the show/race/etc.--just a smaller scale in your case. Give it a trial run.
