Well if you want good sound and not have to spend alot of money then you can do what I did. I took a 400 watt amp and put it on my highs, keeping the stock head unit. Only reason you would really need a head unit is for the extra watts it push's to your highs, but putting a seperate amp on them would have more watts going to them, and less $$$.
You dont need 400 watts if you have stock number of speakers, a 200 watt amp would work fine.
For the subs I use two seperate boxes with MTX 6000 series 10's. The reason for two seperate boxes is so I can have one in the middle when I want my seat back all the way, and then when I ride three people I slide it behind my seat so I can fold the center console up, only takes a sec, dont even have to get out. I have a 600 watt amp going to them. You would need two RCA converters, and two distribution blocks to hook the system up to your stock head unit. I got my stuff from Circuit City with my employee discount for about $250. It would run you about $1000, and I promise it would sound great.
Now I have 1000 watts going to 12 speakers(highs) And the same 600 watts going to 2 subs, 14 total.

Funny you mention it. I starting buying all the part needed to install a box in mine. I am using some big amps 19"x10"x2.25. I have bucket seats so mounting them under the seats won't work. So I decided to go with 4 Focal 5 3/8" subs. Ok, once you get up off the floor and stop laughing these subs are really amazing. Especially for their size. With this configuration I should be able to push my seat back all of the way.
BTW, KrazyJ Happiness is Deer Park in you rear-view mirror. j/k I lived there most of my life and moved away about a year ago.

I am currently running an Alpine cda-852 head unit on stock componets and an Alpine MRV-1000 pushing two JL 10w0-8 in a 4 ohm mono load. I built the box myself so that I could have my seat back all the way. The subs are positioned behind each seat with an amp rack in the center. You cans see some pics here: http://www2.netdoor.com/~kdouglas/Interior/index.htm
