Default 88-98 9.5" swap into 99+ thread

sounds like this has been done a few times. my goal is a budget rear end that is strong and will take 15" rims. here is a post i made in the other thread.

i went to the junkyard. the 9.5" 12bolt(14bolt cover) is about 1/2" narrower than what is stock in my truck. the spring perches are 1.5" closer together. the hub center is the same diameter. the drum was 13" outside diameter wich might be close to a 15" rim but there is a lot of materal that could be removed if needed.

i called toms diff and asked a few questions. they sell any locker or posi you might want and the prices are about the same as for the 10bolt. he told me axles are avaliable for them. stock axles are 33 spline so they might be pleanty strong. the rear end is a c-clip design and as far as he knows no one offers c-clip eliminator kit.

the junk yards asking price was $450. probably get it for $400. the drums were all scalely so add in drums and shoes. better add in $500 for a posi with install kit. i can move the perches and shock mounts.

i think it could be done for just a little over $1000. should be stronger and hold 15" rims as well as stock style rims. they come in 3.42 and 3.73 from the factory. probably need a u joint and adjust the driveshaft length. it might have a 1350yolk in it, it looked prety big.

questions....

anyone know the yolk size? if not a 1350 do they sell a 1350 yolk for it?

is the stock posi any good? it's not a govloc is it? would it be worth trying to get a stock posi unit from the junkyard of just not worry about it and get a aftermarket posi?

what are the issues when switching from disk to drum brakes? i am beting i would need an ajustable proportioning valve and thats about it.

what issues might i run into that i am not thinking of?

i would love to slap on a set of 315/65/15 mt drag radials or whatever there big size is. it is almost 30" tall and i think 11" of tread.

how do you get 15" rims on it? aren't the brakes too large?

yea Jim my new 14 bolt out of a 06 silverado ss had 15" rims on it when it came back from a theft recoverly. the front didnt have calibers on it. on back had the same exact 15" rims i run for drag slicks. its a large drum brake but my 15s fit on it and like i said it had 15s on it when the truck came in.

ok, so it's the newer drum brake set up. did it come with the g80 crap or a real posi?

i think that rear is going to be prety much the same as the 88-98 rear i am looking at other than it wont need spring perch adjustments. i doubt i could get one for close to $400 but i might as well call around and see.

I thought the 14 bolts had locking diffs in them? Sounds like an easy swap...a set of universal perches for $20 and worse case scenario an adapter U-joint for $50 tops plus a little welding. The real deal would be to find a Dana rear end out of a 454SS truck. Yeah that's right they had a Dana in them and they are bulletproof and have a 5 on 5 bolt pattern though along with 3.73 gears. Hell you're in Nebraska what about a 2 speed rearend out of a grain truck? With everyone wanting 6L80's you'd be the first with a 8 speed setup.

Not only is going to the 05-06 14 bolt expensive but good luck finding them. Not everyone is friends with a junkyard owner or whatever Quik.

I have a 93 14bolt out of a van sitting in my garage. Ill get some measurements off of it. It came with drums on it. Im not sure what the width is on but it is suppose to be the same width as the stock 10 bolt.

It suppose to rain tomorrow so I may take a few pics and take some measurements.
