Need some advice guys. I'm new to the restoration side of things. I have the interior mostly out, still need to pull the seatbelts, shifter boot, and carpet. There's a fair amount of surface rust & scale on the floor pans under the back seat. What's a good process for cleaning that up, and then what's a good product to coat the floor pans with? My first thought was to go at it with a wire wheel on an angle grinder, but that's such a huge freakin mess. Is there a chemical stripper or better process out there?

Thanks in advance.

POR 15 (or whatever has come out recently that is similar) would be good to coat with once you remove the buildup.

wire wheel on a grinder and if the pans are not too bad por 15 them. There are all kinds of rust converters on the market but I'm not sure how well they work. Por15 is an awesome product though.

Yes there's everything you can imagine out there for the swap. I don't have any plans to do it though, this thing has a practically new engine already. Since my budget is "thin" to say the least, my plans are to make any corrections needed to the body, paint, and interior, so we can drive it and enjoy the car.

Later on, some suspension mods for handling, then who knows.

Does the POR15 just go on the bare metal? How is it supposed to be applied?

POR15 goes over bare metal or surface rust.

Clean up the scale/ rust the best you can with a wire brush/ grinder with wire wheel.

Then use comp. air and blow every thing off.

Then POR 15 is applied right over the rust. It bonds to it and prevents it from " rusting " anymore. You can hit it with a hammer , its tough when dry and is nice and glossy.

But if any surface is going to exposed to sunlight a top coat of reg. paint must be applied. Sunlight will peel POR 15. I dont know why but it will.

We painted a rusty old roll bar in a jeep and the frame.

The Roll bar peeled from the sunlight and the frame was perfect. We should have painted over the roll bar with rustoleum or other kind of paint.

You will be pleased with POR 15 on your floorpans though Roger.

Good luck with your project, you have a nice clean foundation to work with! Just get it cleaned up/ running good and painted before you start swapping stuff!

Sounds close to what's in my mom's 69' Vette, except it's higher compression (I think 10.25:1).

I'm assuming it's got a M20 transmission in it due to the tall gear?
