Default ak2007r6 Build Thread

Well I told myself I would only do a build thread once I started getting some more serious mods going but work is slow and this will give me something to do. Plus I am a picture ***** so for the few things I have done to my truck, maybe it will come in handy for someone else.

So to start it off I bought the truck in November of 2010. I am an impulse buyer and to date I think this is my biggest one.

Default Removing body molding.

First mod I did was more of just an appearance upgrade. I have never been a fan of body molding and stickers on a truck. I think de-badged and de-molded is just a cleaner and sexier look.

Let the elbow grease and sore fingers commence.

Default Installing HID's

Living in AK where it's pitch black by 5pm in the winter I decided to upgrade the lights. 6k for the fogs, lows and high beams. I opted out of the relay which would have kept the use of my factory DRL's and just pulled the fuses that control them. They work great and only turn on now when it's getting dark outside.

Default 6.2L Exhaust

So a month went by and I wasn't ready to drop the money on an exhaust system yet, plus half the shops I talked to didn't believe me that the piping was 3.5" until they measured it and then didn't have a muffler in stock that would fit it. Most wanted to try and fit a 3" in their of which I laughed and walked out of their store.

So bored and surfing the web one night I read that the truck actually has two mufflers. One main one and then one behind the rear axle that is just a resonator. A light bulb goes off and I go grab my sawza and roll under the truck. 10 minutes later the resonator is off and it is now dumped under the bed.

A few months go by and I still liked the sound but wanted something louder and with a better growl. I just happened to have some time to kill in town so I ran into the local exhaust shop and asked what they suggested and they recommended a Vortec muffler (think that's what it was). It was a cheap cut and replace operation for them so I handed them the keys and came back in an hour.

I go to pay and I hear them start it up to pull it off the lift. I smiled and couldn't wait to get out and see what WOT sounded like.

Eventually I will get LT's and a catles Y-pipe but for now this sounds good enough.

Default Tinting Taillights Using VHT Night Shades

So I went a little out of order. The first thing I did was tint the tail lights. I choose VHT Night Shades and it came out pretty good. I think one more session with the rubbing compound and really buffing it out would make them shine even more but they will do for now.

See below posts for better pictures of them mounted on the truck

if you use a polisher/buffer on the tailights with a polish they will really clean up nice.

Can I do this by hand or would an electric buffer work best? I know I can bring a lot more gloss out of them just haven't taken the time yet.

Only other mod I have had done was a custom tune done by AKlowriderZ71 using HP tuners. I was floored at the difference that made, the difference was night and day.

Here is a few videos from the track. So far the best time is in my sig, really wanting to get into the 13's though.

Next up is a wideband and a better tune. Little more in the future is a Yank stall and then maybe LT's and who knows from there....

This is a 2WD launch. Not my best time but as it stand now this is the best reaction time I have gotten while at the track. All these videos are also on the OEM rims and tires.

This is a compilation of a few races from the same night. All these are 2wd launches. I was unsure about launching in 4x4 at that time so was playing it safe

All the videos below are from later in the year and launching in 4x4 and then switching to 2wd as soon as it shifts out of first. These are also on the spare set of rims and street tires I picked up for the track.

First video was filmed by AKlowriderZ71, the second one is the same race but filmed inside the cab of my truck.
