350 vortec or ls1 swap?
So I have a 98 silverado 5.7 (l31). While in the process of rebuilding the transmission (4l60e) and the motor I found out that a head is cracked, fuel injectors were beaten up, and a few other things.
My goal was to build the motor to about 400-500hp and rebuild the transmission because it was going out.
My question is should I just keep to my original plan or ls swap it?
Is it going to be legal in California with all of the smog regulations?
If I did ls swap it any suggestions on where to get one, how much, mods, and anything else that you can think of?

ive been in your shoes start with a LS engine! I spent close to $10k building a old 5.7 into a forged 383 with all the bells and whistles to make a whopping 340rwhp total waist of time and money, my bolt'on & tune ls1 2k z28 made 380rwhp, my h/C/I bolt'on ls6 zo6 is making 475rwhp 415twtq is its my daily summer driver very street friendly mild cam and still gets 16mpg city 25mpg hwy
swapped my sons 94 rcsb we thought of ls1 or ls6 when we decided to swap it but ended installing a LQ4 we told by a few people the LQ4/LQ9's would be better for a truck we got it up and running still need to have it dyno tuned tho...
LS SWAP! probably save money and make MORE power in the end
we found a used lq4 with all the accessories intake to pan had it machined .30 new pistons ls6 cam bought a beefed up rebuilt 4l80e wiring harness pcm mounts and so on total is less then $6k
