so it took me a little bit longer but I got the D3200 today, they had a good "back to school sale" so I got the camera, 2 batteries, carrying case, UV lens cover, leans cleaning pen and 18-55mm lens
I've taken about 100 pictures so far and I suck haha
I need to actually understand the aperture, iso and shutter speed, reading about it is one thing but putting it to use is a whole different game

Congrats on the purchase! Best way to get better is to just keep taking pictures. Simple way to start is take a few pics in auto mode to get something close to what you like and then use those settings in manual mode and start tweaking each setting to see how it affects your picture.

If you have any specific questions or want examples of how one settings changes how the picture turns out let me know. I got 10's of thousands of photos, I'm sure I could pull one up to help explain certain settings.

Biggest thing is the stock flash is pretty much useless. I mean if it comes down to you need to get the picture and that's the only way to capture it then make it happen but usually the stock flash just puts harsh lighting and shadows on the picture.

Congrats! I would start with the aperture priority setting. Understand what this does to depth of field and its effect on shutter speed. Then you can move to manual later.

I don't know if its just me but your pics seem a little out of focus. Are you using auto focus? If so, are you pressing the shutter button half way to let it focus ad then take the picture?

I think it'll just take some time and better understanding of what effects what.
I do plan to ditch the stock flash and get a better one that goes on top of the camera, they're a fairly decent price too at around $100-$200, so for now I just turned off my flash and if I really need it, then i'll use it.

I did half press the button for a second then click it fully, but perhaps I moved, I know the dog is tough to get cause he's always moving around haha.

DSC_0028_zps5e8176a5.jpg?t=1374433898

aperture f/5.6
exposure 1/640 sec
ISO 800
focal 55mm

DSC_0030_zps4c5818ae.jpg?t=1374434002

aperture f/29
exposure 1/50 sec
ISO 800
focal 55mm

I played around a bit on aperture priority and what I was doing was taking 2 of every pic, one at really high aperture like 5.6 then immediately one at really low aperture like 29

the 5.6 really focused on the flower and gave that blurry background effect, where are the f29 didnt focus very well and turned out pretty poor

so if ive got this right, when you have a really high aperture like 5.6 it focuses more so on the main subject and blurs out the background?

do you guys leave your ISO on auto? I kinda set mine to 800 as a play point and havent touched it much since, but going threw your pics you guys seem to be running like 100-200 and a couple 400.

I really liked Ken Rockwell's website when I was getting into photography.

I think i'm getting the hang of aperture and how to control the depth of field
I also did a little playing with AF- single servo and figured out how to select which of the 11 points it uses to focus
