Army Reserves, whats the catch?
Besides possibly getting deployed is there anything else? My roomate went and talked to a recruiter today and on the outside it sounds like a good deal but Ive heard some bad stories about being in the armed forces. The sign on bonus alone would make me debt free, and with work slowing down Id actually have time to go back to school and if I go a minimum of 7 hours a week they give you 600-700 a month so thats a big plus too. Along with being able to possible work with the corp of engineers which would be good for my construction science degree and being a construction inspector already it would help. I just want to make sure Im not missing something.

Reserves are the first to be deployed. Keep that in mind with the current global situation.
Treat recruiters like Lawyers because they're not there for you! Get everything in writing.

My buddy has been in the reserves for over 2 years and hasnt been deployed so...
He likes being in it but just doesnt know much about how it works now since he signed up almost 3 years ago. Im also not really worried about being deployed, if my number is called, its called, I just want to make sure Im not missing any fine print.

I've been in a few years. Iraq is really slowing down and it's really being milked IMO and probably won't last too much longer (esp with Obama). Afghanistan is now the emphasis but it won't get nearly as big as Iraq (120,000+ at all times), I think there might be 30,000 people there. I'm in college, if you have 12 credit hours a quarter (full time) you get $670 (or $760 I can't remember but I should lol) every month from the VA, part time like 7-10~ credit hours is $500~, and I took 6 credit hours over last summer and it was a few hundred. Tuition assistance is a joke compared to the guard, national guard gets 100%, we get like $4000~ a year, but my mom works at the university I go to so I only pay 20% anyways and have never use it.
With the bonus, you get 1/2 of it within 30 days of reporting to your duty station (the unit you drill with on the weekends), and you get a 1/4 a year after you signed the contract, and the other 1/4 the following year. I signed up in a February, I got half of it when I returned from Basic/AIT, a 1/4 the next February, and the rest the following February.

They tax it, which is why a lot of guys re-enlist while their over seas so it's tax free. Each MOS has a different bonus, especially when they need people for a certain MOS like infantry used to be and transportation ($20,000). Something low demand and safe like a dental MOS or something might get $5,000. You'll know at MEPS, they will show you all the options in your area, like which units have available slots for whatever MOS's your interested in. Combat Engineers probably get a decent bonus.
