Default Has anyone ever tried an LS9 cam in a 4.8L?

Just curious if anyone has ever used one in a 4.8 before. And what the results were. Seems like it could be an OK cam for boosted applications, but wondering how it would do in an N/A engine with bolt ons.

I kind of figured that it would be a dog down low. It's a shame no one tried advancing it at least 4 degrees to see what happened. I was offered one for free... just don't feel like being the test subject.

did you use the cam in a n/a motor, or was it boosted?

Better late than never, thanks for sharing your experience. I am picking up an LQ4 today, but still not sure that I want to put that LS9 cam in that either.

Whats it a dog compared to? other trucks with cams, or the stock truck? Also, why did you only go 4 degrees?

Def a dog compared to the 5.3 cam. You lose ~40lb/ft until 3k ish. With a stock converter that makes for a slow truck off the line. Terribly slow.

Because the set I have is limited at 6, and the LS9 has a -1 ground into it, so 4 is really 3, and 6 would be 5. I was worried about going to 5 as I never checked PTV, and I was running to 6800rpm.

The cam saga started like this (all stock converter):
Stock 2002 5.3 in a Tahoe with 3.73 gears
-LS9 cam'd 5.3 NA 4.10= never dyno'd
-LS9 cam'd 5.3 P1SC 12lbs= 477whp
-LS9 cam +3 (actual) P1SC= never dyno'd, re street tuned
-LS9 cam +3, 1 7/8 LTs to 3.5Y to 3.0, 4.10, NA= Never dyno'd, but it will finally do a brake stand

I retuned at each stage of the game

It was embarrassing having a cam'd truck making 477 that couldn't do a brake stand. But now that the exhaust is reworked, its much better.

Things to take away from this: I have a Tahoe on 33's with 4.10. I would do the LS9 again IAOI I had +3° min, LTs, full exhaust, lightweight vehicle.

Or in a truck with a roots blower. My truck is on its way to a TVS1900 on a 6.0, and I will probably be keeping the LS9 cam

I wish I had taken that free cam...

I see that there are timing sets available with up to + or - 8 degrees. I would check PTV clearance on the stand. I still have both the 4.8 and an lq4.

I am currently considering sticking the stock cam out of the lq4 in the 4.8L, I read somewhere that the swap picked up 20+ in a stock 5.3 engine. (The 4.8 will likely end up in an S10/Sonoma used for a daily where max performance isn't a concern)

Thanks for the info. My engine is at the machine shop, so hell or high water, we are going to install the intake at 113! May have to machine a cam gear. I am thinking this should get the valve events where they should be.
It is going into a LC9, so the 799 heads and flat top pistons should work better than the dish and 5.3L heads.

I may be overly optimistic, but hey, it's worth a shot. We will more than likely put it on the engine dyno, so I will report back with numbers.
