They aren't a terrible transmission but to blanket them like they actually last any decent amount of time is pretty ridiculous. Transmission shops make their living off them.... And it's funny how on a site where anyone that mentions toying instantly gets this "upgrade to an 80e" suddenly has some love for the transmission everyone seems to want to hate. I have never been in a truck with 250000 miles and has an original 60e... and that's a lot of trucks... most of them had far less miles and were on number 2 or 3..
And how often did you change the fluid in them or the filter? I am one of the few that doesnt hate a 4l60! I am on, i think, my 4th 4l60 in my 99 at 264,000!! The 2002 suburban i had had the original trans at 230,000 decide to lose the teeth on the reaction shell, a friend of mine had almost 300,000 on hers when the trans decided to eat the pump, my exwife had a trailblazer she bought new with a 4l60 in it that was still going at 240,000 when she traded it in on her 07 burban which now is coming up on 220,000, on the original trans.... so yes there are horror stories of 4l60s taking a dump With lower mileage, but noone bitches about the trucks with a ton of miles on the original trans.... there are 4l80s i have seen with less than 80,000 that **** the bed, so it really doesnt matter what trans it is its how its taken care of and what is done to it... you start modding a vehicle and yes without building it properly will kill the trans but there are also things, as everyone knows, that can be done to make the trans last even behind good power!! Biggest thing that kills a trans is driving it like granny runing 20% throttle going to the grocery store and back, and then outta the blue grandson drives it first time flooring it after 20 years trans goes out, now the trans is blamed for being a shitty design!!

Who knows..... who cares..... cause I don't. I just find this site hilarious at times with the hypocritical views. I have a 4L65E behind my LS3 going in my Jimmy...... might not last long but you never know. Maybe it will be a miracle and run for years. It's going in because it's easy and requires like zero mods being the truck was a 700R4 and the guy that put it together builds on his own working with FLT.... he rans 9's for quite a few years with one he built behind a turbo 408 LS so I am not that worried. 4L80E = Yuck lol.

Again, i agree with yuck on the 4l80, one day i may build one and put it in my truck when/if i kill the 4l60, i just built, which i dont olan on happening for quite a while, this is the most solid trans i have ever had in this truck, all the rest never really felt right and were inconsistent to say the least... i personally have owned two vehicles with 4l80s in them my 02 avalanche 2500 and a 95 2500 with big blocks, transmissions always felt like they were slipping to me and had no ***** off the line.. i prefer the 1st gear in the 4l60 over the 4l80, and the 6l80 even more than the 4l60, actually prefer the way a 6l80 shifts over any 4speed i have ever driven, at least when they are shifting properly anyway..6l80 just seems to feel i guess more refined to me! That ls3/4l65 sounds like a beast... s series with any 8 cylinder in them are fun as hell!! I had an 84 blazer with a 350/700r4 that was actually faster than my 80 z28 i had at the time!!! In hindsight i wish i would have put an ls based engine in that car....

My 4l60 lasted until 208k. Now I'm onto a 4l65 but im running into issues already due to the builder. Great trans in theory but due to build error it's running worse than my factory 60e.
Doesn't summit or sell a rebuild kit for the 4l80e which shortens the 1st and 2nd gear ratio to get off the line like a 4l60? Though I read that somewhere, could be wrong though.

Yeah I can't be bothered with the 80e when other options exist now. That useless first gear just does it for me..... and yeah the parts to gear it down are enough I would just go 6 speed. My 05 is an 80e..... when it had the stock 3.73's with my tune I could do 60 mph in first..... sweet.... And it just kills the truck for power. A better converter will help and it's getting a 3000 Circle D shortly but still... I am ending up with more Gen 4 stuff all the time now so doing a 6 isn't voodoo anymore lol.

It's not an S series Jimmy lol...it's a K5, square body fullsize.

Factory TBI! Not that it's any better... I have never owned a decent TBI engine and this one was no exception. It's a cool truck though.. low mile, rust free and has the fairly rare factory power mirrors as opposed to the old chrome dumbos.

LOL, I hated those damn dumbo mirrors, took for ever to get right and then when you did, theyd get bumped and have to start all over again!! Mine was an 86, paid $500 for it, the 305 locked up in the driveway the night i brought it home, swapped in a 350 i had sitting around, that threw a rod two weeks later, ordered a complete oil pan to air filter gm crate 383 for it the next morning, put it in and within a week the trans went out, i cant even remember what brand trans i put init at this point but ended up with a 205 transfer case and 4.56 gears all at the same time as the trans swap...started having issues with it stalling randomly, adjusted carb about once a week finally got tired of dealing with it sold it, guy replaced the carb spacer/adaptor plate and never had another issue with it... which i had replaced twice before that.... it was a sign!!
