Default 8spd transmissions? What do y'all think

So I got a damn Raptor....it is a POS....seriously. The sole reason I bought a Ford is the rear is larger and I have two boys in carseats....also there are two large airvents in the console to blow on them. GM hasn't seen it worthy to put such equipment in their trucks in quite a while.

Now that I got that out of the way.....I'm wanting a new Sierra 6.2L. I will supercharge it....roots style. But I wondering about the new transmission coming out. I like buying a 6.2 with 3.73 gears from the factory even though I've had one with 3.42s and it seemed fine, but putting on a lift and 35's I like the 3.73...I'd get 4.10 if avail.

but all in all my real question is what has been said of the 8spd? What's y'alls guys thoughts on it? How is the gearing in it vs the 6 spd? I honestly don't want a vehicle that is continuously searching for what gear it deems correct for my speed.....y'all know what I mean. You're driving through town and your vehicle is constantly searching for gears.....pain in the neck. Especially if you have aftermarket exhaust cause you can hear every damn gear change.

Bottom line go for the 6 or wait for the 8? I could test drive a dodge...don't they have an 8 now....and see what's going on with it.....not buy, but just check out the shifting situation.

Just more worthless CAFE EPA mandated BS it'll be in 8th gear converter locked lugging it's *** off at 45 mph just like the 6 speeds with a stock tune. It'll need a tune to stretch the shifts waaay out just like the 6 speeds need in order to get it to drive like a decent performance minded trans.

Get a 6 speed unless you like being a free beta test for gm's new technology.
3:73's are the deepest you can get and need the NHT max tow package to get them

Id stick with the ford I love mine not a complaint one about it we've had it about a month now and like it much more than the gmc. Especially with 2 rear facing car seats in the back. I traded in 14 gmc 6.2 to pick up platinum 6.2 supercrew. 10 years ago if someone told me I would own a ford in the future I would have told them they are nuckin futs.
It's mamas ride so no mods planned for it anyhow outside of a sct tune
What don't you like about the truck you purchased?

015 6.2 max tow are on constraint,i tried to order one yesterday, may not know anything until Jan. The 015 max tow 6.2 comes with 3.42 when ever they do build them, standard gear is 3.08 and 3.23 Sales manager said maybe march. For the hell of it I drove a dodge 8sp,trans worked good, felt spot on,hemi was weaker than i was expecting, was told the dodge 8 speed has little tow capacity something like 7500 LBS?

I have found a deal on a 014 DC max tow 6.2 GMC it should go down next week.

Funny you mention the dodge. My wife and I drove a RT 5.7 Durango before she decided on the f150. They really spent some time on the trans tune. Even though it was the 8 speed you never knew it the motor was always in the right gear and would pull when you roll on the throttle. Only a couple of times driving in town around that 45-50 mph mark you would have to nudge it to get it to drop a couple gears and roll out.

Haven't tried building out a 15 6.2 NHT yet I need to go look into it a little deeper we haven't had anyone inquire about one yet. I ordered my wifes 14 6.2 with NHT and it had 3:73's buut that was last year. It looks like the horrid axle ratios of the 80's are making a comeback.

my feeling is the 015 tow rating of 12K on the 6.2 8sp with 3.42 is to tall of a gear and could over heat.the truck has plenty of engine an tranny ,pulling a heavy load with a higher gear ratio creates a lot more heat than a low ratio.Being a 14 bolt helps but im not certain its enough.Wouldnt that be something if they decided to go back to 3.73

I say wait for the 8 speed, (knowing almost all 1st year transmissions have issues and software patching)

Gear ratios:
4 Speed 4L60
3.059 1.625 1.000 0.696, Reverse 2.29

6 Speed: 6L80
4.027 2.364 1.532 1.152 0.852 0.667, Reverse 3.064

8 Speed: 8L90
4.56, 2.97, 2.08, 1.69, 1.27, 1, 0.85, 0.65, Reverse 3.82

Looks mostly like it’s made for city driving and getting under way with heavier loads, towing and cursing will be about the same, but the L86 6.2 has more power it should be a good comb.

New engines paired with current 6-speed on K2xx trucks:
When my truck was in the shop for 7 days, the dealer gave me a new 2014 CCSB SLE 2wd. It had a 5.3 w 6 speed, not sure why everyone talks so highly of them I thought it was POS, and the v8 - v4 downshift when coasting down to idle, when coming to a stop light was harsh/awful. The truck drove very power band like the I5/6's in the old trail blazers. seemed like I had to lean into it more to keep it rolling, only managed about 14.5mpg with mixed driving and being really light on it. I begged them for my truck back. IMO, same transmissions but the K2xx shift logic is worse than the GMT900's, let’s hope the new 8 speed shifts better than the 6 speeds. It would be smilar to going from the old 4L60 to 6L80's.

added, just drove a 2015 caddie, it would not let me drive in higher gears at slow speed, seems GM is working on trans gear vs speed so reduce/elimate most the lugging at slow speeds. but I agree 01ws6/tamu they all need tune, even mine.

It would be the equivalent of having 3.73 with the 6 speed and tacking on another gear to have even less RPM when unloaded on the highway.
