2006 silverado 1500 and ly6 engine/4l80e trans
Hello all. I just picked up a new project and turns out the swap the seller intially thought was a lq9, it actually a ly6 with the 823 heads and I also got the 4l80e transmission
So the truck is a 2006 silverado 1500 with 5.3L.
Beings the lq9 would have been a direct swap for the most part, now that the swap is actually a ly6, I have been searching endlessly to see what i have to swap.
For starters the truck will be a mild street setup with weekend trips to the drag strip. My initial plans (actually its a good customers of mines project) were to do the lq9 block/l92 heads/ls3 intake with a mild cam to try to reach somewhere near 450-480hp.
I will also be getting hptuners.
So now since I have what appears to be this vvt engine, although it comes with the heads i want, I am stumped.
Some questions I have:
I still have the 5.3L i can steal parts off of. What do I need to delete the vvt?
I do plan to get a cam as well so not sure if that changes what needs to be done.
Comp LSR™, 265LR HR12 which is 265/273 and 604/610
Which valley cover do I use? I noticed the 5.3L gen 3 in the truck now has this two wire connector with black plugs on the valley cover and the ly6 does not.
Is the ls3 intake worth getting over the ly6? And what am I getting myself into putting it into the 2006 gen 3 truck?
Thank you everyone for the help!

I don't think that's a good cam choice.
The black plugs cover your knock sensors, the LY6 has them on the side of the motor. You'll have to wire those in and change the tune for them but I have no clue what that will envolve.
The LY6 is a gen 4 motor and has a different cam sensor placement, you'll need a 24x to 58x converter box thing to make it work or swap the reluctor rings.
Stock intake is fine. And to me it's so much more work and extra money to try and put a gen 4 motor into a gen 3 truck.

If your putting a cam in it anyway, you just need the front timing cover a 1x 3 bolt cam gear, a 58x to 24x converter box, harness extensions for cam sensor and knock sensors.. Is the block aluminum or cast??valley cover should just be able to leave the one thats on the engine on there as it shouldnt have dod...

Hey guys, got the old engine/trans pulled out this morning and been reading and reading some more.
I plan to stick with the l92 intake manifold (rather than the ls3 intake). So that solves that questions.
So i came across this Mast Motorsports High Performance Powertrain Solutions
Now I have decided on two options:
1. the above kit from Mast m-90 ly6 ss performance package (505hp)
2.I can get the vvt delete, get a nice cam (looks like the one in my initial post is a bit overkill for what i intend), some valve springs, and like mentioned i will need the ls1 to ls2 knock sensor retrifit harness and the cam position retrofit harness (saw them on texas speed website), and hptuners (or diablo sport)

I would sell the heads , put a good set of ported milled cathedrals on it, new LS7 lifters , gut the vvt phaser and cam , do something around a 224ish cam ,
I hope that cam in your first post was a misprint because with that cam and those heads that thing will be a complete turd till top end .
My 6.2 runs good in my denali , even with having more CR than your LY6 does , a good tune, E85, better low gearing in the trans, its not as torquey on the bottom as my stock LQ4 tune only in my van w/80e .
Or keep that engine the way it is and put an LSA blower on it , would be cheaper in the long run and more satisfying .

Thank you for all the replies.
Got together with Lonnie over at TSP. We are going with the 225/230 and 629/615 on 114lsa. Converting the front cover to a gen 4 non-vvt.
As for the transmission, ended up going with the transgo hd2 shift kit along with some advice from Jake's Performance on some steps to skip that come in the kit. Also got a 3r-1330 ujoint and a new 4l80e yoke.
I am having a hard time deciding between TSP or PaceSetter long tube headers and Y pipe?
Also having a hard time deciding between efilive or hptuners?

Havent actually installed mine yet, but if you read the thread, the driver side o2 on the 1 7/8 needs to be moved.... And a common issue with most ypipes is being close on 4l80s from my understanding its a section of pipe needing to be added to the driver side to help... Most ypipes are designed to fit a 4l60 because its the most commonly factory equipped transmission...
