the rearend is the same,
but it could be a G-80 or Open diff.

I would recomend replacing the differential with a stronger aftermarket one such as an Eaton LSD or a Detorit True Trac.

Nice writeup! Should change the "complete" word to "turn-key". <-- easiest

It did a search, but didn't come up with much about using the stock manual 5-speed when swapping to a v8. I assume it will bolt up fine, but what flywheel and clutch would you use? Where the only v8's with manual trannies 4.8's? Would a 4.8 flywheel and clutch work?

The only concern would be the HP rating in which the 5 speed can handle, i believe you would also need the 4.8 flywheel and a heavy duty clutch.

You could always do a t-56 swap with a larger clutch, I just dont think that a stock 5-speed can take the abuse the larger V8 will give it.

What engine are you wanting to swap in?

I'm not really trying to race it, just something a little better than this gutless v6. I just want to use the stock 5-speed tranny for awhile. Probably a 5.3 for now since they seem much cheaper than a 6.0. Later on might do a 6.0 and T56. All of the complete 5.3 I have seen have been auto's. If I got a 5.3 with a harness and computer for a auto, could I modify the harness for manual and have the computer reprogrammed?

get with Vince from FLT and ask him how much HP a tock 5-speed can handle, im sure he can give a good estimate
