Default Nnbs factory head question

Got a 08 silverado yesterday day and noticed one head has 853 in it and the other I haven't been able to see yet. It's a 5.3 and I thought they came with 799/243 heads in the nnbs ?
Any one know if some come with 853 heads or did some one change it out along the way?
Thanks guy.

Someone must have swapped them, 853's are LS1 cylinder heads if I remember right.

853 is a LS1 head. If you decide to keep the heads I would mill them 30 thou. The 853 came in 2 flavors. 1 casting has a notch on the exhaust side which was used to prying the head off the block, while some 853 castings did not have that notch.

If you have the notch you MUST run graphite gaskets ( 12498543 )! If the heads do not have a notch then you can run the LS1 MLS gaskets ( 12498544 ).

Good Luck!

That is a good idea! You really never know what you are getting into when you buy a used GEN III / GEN IV vehicle. I have a buddy that bought a NBS escalade which we though was really slow and sluggish, and it turned out that someone had pulled the LQ9 and replaced it with a LR4.

Just curious, why cant you run an mls gasket on the 853's with the notch?

Okay....was looking for a little more than that. Why do they leak? What is different about them than any other head that works with an mls gasket?
