Default magnetic shavings in oil

Was in the process of getting the truck ready for the opening track day next week since she's out of storage. Before i found this i was out ripping on it and it ran perfect. Also had 38psi hot at idle and 65ish at wot. I ended up draining the pan and found two little chunks of metal stuck to the plug. The trucks top end was completely redone less than 5000mi ago, proper preload, yella terras brand new ls7 lifters pushrods heads etc etc. The only thing I can think of is that I may be having a comp flaking issue or that something passed through the engine prior to the heads( had a bad lifter and original rockers and pedestals have both seen there better days) but I did manage to get a picture

Thanks in advance

T.J.

If thats the only thing I saw on my drain plug, I wouldnt have even gave it a second thought.

But thats just me. If there were lots of metal powder and bits covering it then I'd raise an eyebrow.

Cut open the filter and inspect it, see what you find.

I was actually bringing the filter in to my work to marrow to cut it and see what's going on but there was some sshavings on the plug as well. Just very fine powder which has been going on since I've owned it lol. Idk I'm just **** when it comes to stuff like this even if it was in the top end it still traveled into the pan which concerns me. I've been debating pulling this engine now it may just be happening

I'm kind of torn whether that's concerning or not. Mine has always had the very fine linear shavings on the magnetic plug, although I haven't seen anything like that. That looks a bit bigger than I'm used to seeing. Agree with cutting the filter open.

Either way I'd rather be safe than sorry. For me it's a mental thing if something that large passed through the crankcase I think it might be time to start fresh. I'm gonna cut the filter open on my lunch break and see what's inside. I'll try to get some pictures

Hey. You could always have this on your plug and then you got some worrying to do. It is a terrible pic but this is a cavalier plug which are those strong magnetic pencil tip style. Also, the plug was hard to get out because there was so much metal stuck. I couldnt help myself but post this pic from 2009.

Ouch that's a rough one man and I spun the filter at work I'll post pictures as soon as I'm home. I think it's time for a new cam or just do a whole new build. Lots or magnetic and some bearing material

And the reason why I pulled the trigger on a new short block. Screened it although most was magnetic there was some bearing material in there as well

Damn. Yeah I felt bad for the Cavalier owner but they were so stoned to listen to anything I said. Also, this is when I worked at Jiffy Lube back in my junior and senior year. Man the **** I saw... I could write a book!

i remember when I first bought my 07 1500 i changed the oil and there was a lot of moisture and foam in it as it drained which freaked me the hell out at first but remembered it was on a dealer lot just sitting until I came around.

On my 98 1500 I remember seeing metallic looking bits in the oil as it drained but nothing on the magnet. So I bought a neodymium magnet and stuck that on a non magnetic plug end. That got ultra fine particles which got me worrying. then i totalled the truck which reminds me, i should do the neo magnet on my 07 now since i hear the lifters getting noisy at me...

I also stuck a neo magnet on a buddys "built" trans in his stang and i told him he had an issue with it. week later and a pan dropped confirmed it wasnt stalling correctly but slipped like a ****. that magnet got chunky!
