Default LY6 has reached the breaking point. Time for a new crate engine.

Here's the specs:

2009 2500HD. 6.0L, Procharger D1SC with 3.4" pulley, EFI Live tune. 541 hp and 503 ft-lbs.

Ran her hard the last year. Lots of cross country travel and towing. Just hit 172,000 miles.. Excess blow by is now smoking from the oil filler neck. I'm assuming ring lands or pistons are hurting at this point. I'll run a leak down and compression test soon to confirm the damage.

I'm interested on the GM crate engines and just have no clue what fits and which direction to go. This is my first GM truck I've owned so I'm a bit overwhelmed on the options available. I would like more torque and bigger displacement. The 454HO looks like a beast. Pair that up with the Procharger and its gonna be a monster. Any of their crate engines has very good potential so please educate me on the best choice.

Is there a specific generation I should be shopping for? I want to simply remove the LY6 and swap in the 454 if this is even "simply" possible. Are the electronics compatible, transmission bolts on and engine mounts match up?

If anyone can direct me to resources to find answers please do so. Write ups, how to's etc. I'm looking through the forums now to get a grasp of this project. Need her on the road asap.

For the easiest plug and play, you would want to stay with an LS Gen IV engine.

The GM Performance Parts Catalog list all of the following

If I'm not mistaken, the COPO engine replacements longblocks should meet that criteria (if they let you buy them), but they are expensive $20k:
COPO 350/350 Long Block 19301615
COPO 396/390 Long Block 19301614
COPO 427/430 Long Block 19299607

The LSX3765-B8 Crate Engine is a long block built specifically to handle up to 8 lbs of boost. This sounds more along the lines of your needs and would drop right in and bolt up because it has the standard LS 6 bolt crank flange. P/N 19260831 $6700

The LSX3765-B15 Crate Engine is a long block built specifically to handle up to 15 lbs of boost. NOTE: This has the LSX 8-bolt crank flange. P/N 19299306 $8900

The LSX454 NOTES: (1) This has the LSX 8-bolt crank flange. (2) Requires LS7 pattern intake manifold. P/N 19260833 $11.3k

The LSX454R This engine is a beast! NOTES: (1) This has the LSX 8-bolt crank flange. P/N 19260835 $21.5k

You could also purchase any of the other LS crate engines, such as an LS3 ($7000) - they would come with car specific items you would sell, such as intake/exhaust manifolds, oil pan, crank pulley, etc.

As a last gasp, you can talk to the your local parts guys about a replacement LY6 (or L92) motor, if available.

In any case, you would take your specific truck items, such as intake manifold/fuel rails/injectors, oil pan, all accessories, sensors and transfer them to the new engine

Edit:
Replacement LY6 engine: P/N 19209705 $3500

I like the specs on the LSX454. Im assuming this adapter is required 8-Bolt Crankshaft Adapter Kit - LSA/LSX454: GM Parts Direct: Your direct source for Genuine GM Parts. My transmission Code is MW7, MYD.

I'm thinking to go ahead and just upgrade the transmission as well to handle the extra torque and horsepower. Something like this perhaps 6L90 Transmission for Sale - 6L90E Rebuild With Torque Converter

I'm to the point now of just getting it done with better and stronger parts. Let me know what else I need to consider upgrading on this project. The tuner had also mentioned we have maxed out our fuel supply and need to upgrade our the stock set-up. I have larger injectors already in place so the next step is the pump. I will also be upgrading to one of these Lonnies Performance Double pumper kits & Fuel Systems - GM Trucks

If you guys have other resources I can contact or shop from let me know where. I'm gonna start buying parts this week.

The LSX454 looks very tempting. I'll need to get the 6 to 8 bolt adapter plate correct? My tranny code is MW7, MYD but based on my research, I might as well upgrade the transmission. 6L90 perhaps?

Just gonna get this project done with stronger and better parts. The tuner suggested we upgrade the fuel set-up as the last tune was already running out of fuel even with the larger injectors. Dual fuel pumps will be needed as an upgrade as well.

Send me more info of what else to consider buying and where to buy it from. I would like to get this project going asap. Sourcing parts from vendors that have good reputation is a must.

It should already have a 6 speed transmission in it if you have a 2009.

I was also under the impression that 2009 2500hd already had the 6L90 in it...

And if I were you, I would take $4,000 and build a forged 408ci out of that LY6 and be done with it.... But if you decide to go with a whole new motor, let me know what you want for the LY6, thanks

A quick look is showing the MW7 to be an Allison 1000 6-speed transmission. It this right?

BTW, that LSX454 already blows your $10k budget out of the water.

It's a 6speed and I gotta research the RPO codes or look around the tranny to see if I can confirm what it actually is. All I can referrence is through the VIN decoder. I just want to make sure the tranny can handle the power especially I go for the 454. The budget is gonna have to go up at this point. Building the LY6 is an option but I don't have experienced local resources that can accomplish the task with confidence and in a timely manner.

I think the crate engine option will give me reassurance that it's built to spec. I just have to match up the pieces to make it a compatible swap. So far I think it's all starting to make sense.
