Default LQ4 crank bolt missing

Need a little help here.

Are some LQ4's not machined for crank bolts?

I just pulled off the balancer and timing gear and noticed this crank snout is not machined for a balancer bolt.

The engine came from a previous owner who had taken alot of bolts out of the engine and what not.

Seems some manuels and online sources say that balancer is held on by a bolt. Which makes sense, but does bolt not have to have threads? Does it tighten in way Im not aware off?

Thanks

Never heard of that.

Is there a hole on the crank for a bolt? If so, maybe someone drilled out the threads if they got buggered.

My engine was a 99, and the original crank was tapped for a bolt and the balancer was held on by a bolt. I have never heard of one not held on by a bolt. Can you take a pic of it?

threads are deep into the crank, typically a finger wont fit that far to feel the threads

How do you intend to install a crank damper without threads in the crank to hold the tool?

Quick answer is that all of the LS cranks are threaded. Yours may be damaged if the threads are gone.

Question is. How far back are the threads and how long is the crank bolt? 4, 4.5" and or 5"?

I see that now.

I guess the previous owner discarded the old crank bolt and did not know where it was when I purchased it from him.

The OEM GM crank pulley bolt is TTY, so it can't be reused. You can buy an ARP bolt that is reusable.
