Default LM7 to LQ9 Swap

Well ladies the LM7 has had the cam and tune in it since 11,000 miles and at 142,000 it finally croaked. New to me engine is coming out of a 2005 Escalade EXT with 64,000 miles... Question is; does anyone have any advice or pointers on things to look for during the swap? Also, my truck is tuned for the LM7 with the cam noted in my signature. How crucial is it for a re tune?

Oil leaks, I'd replace seals/gaskets if they have been leaking to save you time.

A tune is a must, 6.0 is a bigger engine, requires different amounts of air and fuel/timing etc at different times and the computer needs to know what size motor/injectors etc it has.

I agree with the above. Things I wished I had changed before I swapped my motor:

Rear Main Seal
Valley Cover Gasket
Oil Sensor
Cam Sensor

Basically all the hard-to-get-to stuff.

It will need a re-tune no doubt to run its best but it is not completely necessary if you swap everything over from your 5.3 and all that is different is the displacement. I ran mine on my stock 5.3 tune for several months and even made a few track passes with it before I got it tuned for the new motor. It gained about 4 tenths in the 1/8th after the tune.

We replaced front main cover seal, water pump, thermostat, and new spark plugs. Motor is bolted up to the tranny and engine mounts but haven't put on the accessories yet. I'll go ahead with the knock sensor at a minimum. Would it be better to just keep the tune I have now for the cammed LM7 or have them flash it back to stock until I can get it tuned?

You will need a retune. Do not drive it without a retune or if you have to, drive like a granny (stay out of the throttle).

How did you blow a cam only 5.3 at 145,000 miles? You must have been giving that thing some serious hell! Good luck on the 6oh swap.

It started using oil about 40,000 miles ago. One rocker arm broke two years ago, then another etc. Too much metal floating around in the engine I'm guessing because ever since the first one broke I found chunks of metal on the drain plug. Replaced the oil pump once and then one day I started it up and it had very low oil pressure and had a terrible ticking/knocking noise. Shut it off, fired it up two days later and blew smoke like an diesel with no oil pressure.

What year is the truck? Is the 05 LQ9 stock?

If it's 03-up, Why not just get a stock LQ9 tune for the time being untill you can get a retune?

If you don't have software, any mail order place can do it for you.
