What can i do to get better gas mileage out of a 8.1 dually?
my father-in-law just bought a 2002 chevy 8.1 dually. he only gets about 13 mpg around town. he gets about 8 mpg when he is towing his fifth wheel. if anybody has proven improvements to gas mileage please let me know. thanks

sell it, some people will say to put a air intake on it and exaust or something but when I did it on my 5.3 i went form 16-17 hiway mpg to about 13-14 mpg so its your call

There are a few guys on pickuptruck.com running a reprogrammed PCM from Wester's Garage and are claiming a little better fuel mileage along with noticeable power increase. This guy has an 8.1 and is pleased with the new PCM: flywater guide's comments
Give it a look,

Consider him lucky! My dad has a 8.1 and gets 9 loaded or unloaded. Gas milage sucks, but they are sure fun to drive.

Park it and get something economical to drive when you don't need to tow.
I get about 11 on a goood day in the city with my half ton.

Intake and Exhaust would help, on every car I have done this too, the mileage has gone up. Anything to make it easier for the engine to get the air in and out of it will help you out

I am getting around 18mpg in my 5.3. I only started around 16.5 when I first bought the truck. It really went up with a programmer, intake, and really went up with a throttle body spacer. But that is on a 5.3. Good luck.

13mpg is awesome for that rig in town.My 02 2500HD gets 9.5 overall.Buy a Dmax, mileage is significantly better(I avg 16.5mpg)its faster than 8.1 also.At 100,00 miles a Dmax is worth $6000.00 than comparable 8.1.I'll never buy another big block in a pickup again.

I would question the accuracy of 13mpg average, i'm getting 10.7 average, crusing getting 15-16. To get better fuel economy I would suggest using AC to a minimum, running 45psi possibly (these tires have heavier load rating from 1/2 tons that have 44psi max tires). Honestly the cost of fuel is still low enough (don't let politicans hear this!) that the savings of driving a compact car 10,000 miles a year you may only save $300 bucks if that. I went from a V6 S10 filling up with $25 bucks a week to this truck $40 a week, not a huge savings.
