Default finally looking to build the spare engine......hopefully

So, after being plagued with delays for one reason or another, I'm finally looking at digging into my spare 5.3 engine hopefully this spring/summer. I've already torn it down, minus removing the crank. everything looked decent. I'll need to get the crank turned down about .010" (heat checking on the main journals) at least and get a new windage tray, but other than that, not bad.

I decided that the best thing to do right now would be to just go ahead and bore her out. I have not mic'd the cylinders, but I don't suspect they'd be hourglassed. Still has all the crosshatching with no to very minor polishing.

I'm NOT building it for H.H.P., just enhanced daily with a little towing/hauling.

What is a good number to go with for boring the cylinders out? The pistons I'm looking at, I can get in .020", .040", and .060". Am I safe with going with Hyper's for daily? Obviously forged is better, but I'm just curious.

Another thing I'm curious is: has anybody decked a set of 862 heads? What's the max allowed? If you even can, mind you.

Kinda thinking of having a mild port and polish done when I send the heads off.

Thanks guys.

Stock pistons are Hyper so why wouldn't they be good for a mild build?

Hell, everyone just dumps boost on stock rotating assemblies and I've read of rods failing before the pistons (given the tune was good)

I thought the stock pistons were forged? hell, If that's the case, then all I need to know is how big to bore the cylinders out.

Check the thickness between bores, if it's a Gen III block, should out to 3.898 - stock 5.7L LS1 bore size. A few of the sponsors sell iron 5.7s. I think the heads can go 58-59 cc from 62, safely. Which should be around a .030" cut.

Should be a gen 3 block. 03 or 04. I was thinking of just milling the heads like .015" or .020".
