I'll poke the bear....
Why are you hellbent on 400hp? What is it with that number? Did someone outrun you and give you a case of major butt hurt? It's just a number.
Tires, gears, converter, time of day and whether or not someone farted in front your truck affects that number.
An average cam replacement with springs, pushrods, gaskets and fluids will set you back about $1200. Not including labor.
You can trim that down some or alot if you don't mind buying used hardware. Alot of guys do it and never had a problem. Again, just setting expectations.
A converter is going to run you about $450 or so for something reputable and decent. Not including labor.
That's $1650.
If you do gears and since you're 4wd, it'll cost ya about $1200 (with labor). Why? You have to change out the gears in the front to match the rear.
I don't mean to come off brash or as an ******* but you're aiming for a number.
Aim for a goal. You'll be much more happy with the result.

Yes those fans are a very common option.
Longtubes will make a monster difference. We are talking 25hp difference especially with a good cam.
Cam selection is pretty simple to be honest. You don't need something max effort. A circle D 278mm converter is a great option with a 3200 stall speed. Add a 220/224 mile lift LSA112 cam to the mix and you will have something capable of beating a lot of mustangs and most of the ricers.
