Default 87 vs 93 tune

currently have a black bear 87 tune. im looking for more power. is there really a big difference between the 87 and 93 tune. is the power or mpg worth the extra cost each fillup?

With a higher octane, you have the ability to make more power and be safer.

I'd never run 87 if I wanted to try and make any power period.

Knowing nothing about what is done to your vehicle, it's hard to say how much more power you can gain with a different tune using a better grade fuel.

well when i got my tune i ran the 93 tune for a while and then changed to the 87 tune for a while, like 2-3 fill ups. noticed that the 93 was just peppier, not necessarily more power just more responsive. mileage was about the same.

To me it was worth it. The cost difference per tank really isn't all that much. Gas mileage wasn't much different either. My 87 tune did better in town, but my 93 tune gets better highway by 2-3mpg.

exhaust, thats it. i was hoping to be A bigger difference in the power differences from the 87 to the 93. cost is a pretty large diffrence. around here 87 and 93 are about a 60-70 cent gap. only some station will have a 20-30 cent gap where it should be. the diffrence in filling up is almost 25-30 bucks

You must have one massive gas tank then.

Depending on your compression. If you are stock internals Theres no point in a 93 tune. People are going to say 93 makes so much more power but you will never find a dyno graph showing a good 87 tune vs a good 93 tune that shows worthwhile results ( on a stock internal motor of course). I ran a 89 tune when I was stock compression and would run 87 on long trips and higher when at the track I checked the plugs and never had signs of detonation.

Bottom line.....if your looking for more power this would not be the place I would start with regard to "bang for your buck". However, as mods increase and power increases it makes sense, to me anyway, to run the higher octane fuel to get the most out of the parts you spent a lot of money on. Not sure what all mods you have now but I would be looking at intake, exhaust, gears, etc. to boost power and track times before making the switch to 93.

You will barely feel the difference between a 87 tune and a 93 tune on a stock truck. When I was young and dumb I did that on my 03 5.3 silverado and I could even tell the difference.
