Default 1999 Z-71 5.3 engine swap

Hello All!
This is my first post and I hope y'all can help me out. My daughter in law has the above truck and we believe she killed her motor. In order to save time and effort we were planning to have the whole unit swapped out then deal with the old motor when she is back to driving. We have located several motors to include an 02 w/60K that a friend of hers will sell to her at a great price. I have been messing with cars for 30 years but the LS stuff is Greek to me so I had a buddy at his wrecking yard (and several other sources) check the Hollander interchange and he said it is 1999 ONLY with no adaptations. Spent the whole day yesterday talking to everyone I know (I am actually in the car business) and NOBODY can tell me why or what we can do to make a newer unit work. I got a lot of " just do it they will swap" but I have taken that advice before and they can't afford to do it and not have it work out.
Any advice or help will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
David

99 does have a couple things that were a year only thing I'm sure, so thats why they say it won't swap.

The fuel injectors are different for sure, they are smaller than 2000+.

2001-2002+ does not have an EGR, so if you got those years you need to swap intake manifolds. All easy stuff and a great time for new intake gaskets and knock sensors.

All you really you have to do is swap over the fuel rail and injectors over to the other motor and everything should be plug and play. And if you got a newer than 01+ motor, you will need to swap you intake manifold over because the 99 with have the EGR port.

Thanks FFDP for your reply!
I have learned that the 2000 + had a little more HP and torque and knew there had to be some differences but no one could tell me what they were. Is there anything we will need to do with the computer or use her old sensors? I ask because that is some of the things I have been told that we MAY have to do.

I guess to make it easy, just swap over the parts you need to onto the new motor and use the same computer and harness from the 99.

The 00+ motors had different HP rating because they used bigger injectors and had a better operating system in the computers(2001+), thus allowing for more horsepower to be made with better technology.

Hey,

All you need to do is swap over a complete longblock from 99-06 4.8 or 5.3, or 01-06 6.0. Install your exhaust manifolds and intake manifold onto the longblock and you're done.

You're Wrong!!!
It was Air injection that went way in 2001, EGR was different between Federal emissions and CA Emissions built vehicles in 2001.

2002 had NO EGR or AIR Injection.

You also won't find Air Injection on the 2500 line up.

The injectors are not why it had a different HP rating. Some of it's in the programing. But the physical computers are similar between the 99-00 and the 01-02 only the Internal chip changed. The factory often under rated engines especially in the first year of production.

To the OP, As mentioned by GMCtrk, you're basically swapping the long block.

Swap the complete Intake Manifold from your existing truck.

Swap the Exhaust manifolds only if they are different.

The only sensor on the engine that could be different is the Oil pressure sensor switch depending on the year of the donor engine.

Now would also be a good time to replace intake gaskets as they are usually flattened out and don't re-seal
