this is the way I check , drill bit works very well

What about converter snout to crank hub engagement? Is this not as important as pump engagement? Only reason I ask is because I had a converter that could have spaced so far away from the flex plate that there was daylight between the two.

I have the same issue. If I fully seat the converter all the way back, there is a ton of space. I also know that if I bolt it up yo the flex plate that it is too far out of the pump. It will drive under its own power and lockup works and everything. I want to go back and shim it so I would like to know if the snout/hub engagement is important too.

yes it is important

it sounds to me like you need a new flexplate to properly space things
possibly yours is coned and has improper spacing.
