I think I broke something lol I have a mid mounted T76 5.3L swapped S10 with a 278mm single Disk circle D 3200 stall and a 96 stock 4L80e. On saturday I made a really hard pull on 10#s not hooking at all down the road, since my stall is only a single disk, I had the shifter in "3". All of a sudden during the pull I hear a faint "pssh" noise kind of like A blow off valve or like pressure had been released, and rpms start to raise around 2-3rd gear,the slip was obvious as shifts seemed to be delayed along with flaring. Drove pretty normal, temps were around 160 but had gotten to 181*, all of a sudden it started feeling the transmission was losing gear engagement without throttle during takeoff in every gear. Pulled in my driveway and it started rolling backwards in "D" but would engage in gear if I applied throttle same with reverse. Said screw it and drove to work, babying it. When I left work NADA, no engagement at all, just revved up like it was low fluid or in neutral. I kept revving it to like 3-4 grand and the gears finally would engage but trans was acting funky... did I screw up the pump? Fluid looks pink but smells like an exploded cell phone battery lol

Clutches are shot...These things arent that tuff unless some pressure mods are done.

What type of pressure mods are you referring to? I'm gathering parts for my 80e swap and I was planing an hd-2 kit and circle d 3200 stall convertor. I thought these were bullets, I have 6.0 with RHS 225 heads lts fast 102 setup.

HD-2 kit covers you. I would think about a sonnax boost valve rather than the stupid relief hole that the HD-2 has you drill.

My experience with the hd-2 is that it sucks. I would use the springs only,and buy the sonnax self regulating boost valve. Dual feed the directs per Jakes recommendation.

I've just taken it out of storage and smelled the Trans fluid and it smelt a little burnt. So I might just rebuild it myself. Gonna have to get in touch with Jakes Performance and get a rebuild kit. One thing after another.

The TransGo HD-2 shift kit is... okay...

The TransGo HD-2 shift kit on 4L80Es differs than other HD-2 kits for other transmissions. Whereas other kits are strictly shift kits with a few performance tweaks, the HD-2 has a hydraulic modification that allows for more oil to feed the third gear clutches (one of, if not the FIRST weak link to address in the 4L80E or TH400).

This mod is known as "dual feeding" and is very effective... when done right. TransGo's kit gives you a band aid when you need gauze, but it's somewhat better than stock. The oil fed to the clutches is not as effective as doing the modification internally, and you are left with TransGo's shitty "sandwich" separator plate design which commonly has cross leaks due to several very thing plates being "sandwiched" together. This is why you see so many guys do the shift kit on JY pull outs. A lot of them don't know WHY they are doing it, a few do, but most just think the HD-2 shift kit will be their be-all-end-all solution.

For someone who doesn't have the courage or doesn't want to take the plunge into digging into the transmission themselves there are alternatives. If you have access to a mill you can mill several passages in conjunction with a few other tricks to dual feed the clutches through the valve body itself, which is more effective than what TransGo provides. The stock separator plate should normally be fine to work with but using a fresh copy of TransGo's galvanized plate will not hurt you one bit. You can block the accumulator with a tap and two set screws, drill out the 2nd, 3rd and 4th feed holes, throw in a Sonnax Boost valve kit and re-configure your checkball setup accordingly and you're already off to a decent start right there.
