I did a search and couldnt find where anyone said what gear the trans selector on the side of the trans is suppose to be in when installing a new NSS. This is the first time Ive installed a new NSS and looking at the way the slot is clocked in the NSS it looks like I need to have the rod in the neutral position but at 80 bucks a pop Id rather have a bit of confirmation before popping this thing on there.

Getting close to getting the Z up and running, only been damn near 3 years since it took its last breathe

It dont matter as long as the slots line up. The switch will only rotate soo far and that should be either 1st or park.

With the rod in the neautral position the slots line up and the holes the bolts go hrough line up but I just wanted confirm before I seated it in there.

The NSS is 80 bucks and it has a retainer clip that holds it in a certain position and once you pop it on there that little clip is toast or so Im told. Ive never put a brand new one on before always been used ones...

It depends on whether or not you look at the instructions for replacing or adjusting the NSS, but I figure you will just have to install it and then follow the procedure for adjustment because I don’t know of anyone that would have one of GM’s fancy little alignment tools on hand. I figured I would list both sets of instructions though, just so you would have them and let you decide what made sense.

Neutral Safety Switch Replacement
1. Install the switch to the transmission manual shaft by aligning the switch hub flats with the manual shaft flats.
2. Slide the switch onto the transmission manual shaft until the switch mounting bracket contacts the mounting bosses on the transmission.
Important
Do not tighten the bolts at this time.
3. Install the switch to the transmission with two bolts finger tight.

4. Position the tool J 41364-A onto the park/neutral position switch. Ensure that the two slots on the switch where the manual shaft is inserted are lined up with the lower two tabs on the tool.
5. Rotate the tool until the upper locator pin on the tool is lined up with the slot on the top of the switch.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts securing the switch to 25 N•m (18 lb ft).
6. Remove J 41364-A from the switch.
7. Connect the electrical connectors to the switch.
8. Install the transmission control lever to the manual shaft with the nut.
Tighten
Tighten the control lever nut to 25 N•m (18 lb ft).
9. Lower the vehicle.
10. Check the switch for proper operation. The engine must start in the P (Park) or N (Neutral) positions only. If proper operation of the switch can not be obtained, replace the switch.

Neutral Safety Switch Adjustment
Important
• Apply the parking brake.
• The engine must start in the P (Park) or N (Neutral) positions only.
• Check the switch for proper operation. If adjustment is required, proceed as follows:

1. Place the transmission range selector in the N (Neutral) position.
2. With an assistant in the drivers seat, raise the vehicle.
3. Loosen the park/neutral position switch mounting bolts.
4. With the vehicle in the N (Neutral) position, rotate the switch while the assistant attempts to start the engine.
5. Following a successful start, turn the engine off.
6. Tighten the bolts securing the switch to the transmission.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 25 N•m (18 lb ft).
7. Lower the vehicle.
8. Check the switch for proper operation. The engine must start in the P (Park) or N (Neutral) positions only.
9. Replace the park/neutral position switch if proper operation can not be achieved.

Thanks a lot, Ill just install it the best I can and adjust later, its holding me up from putting the driveshaft in and ziptying everything up out of the way.

I paid 80 from the dealer, where did you get it for 40 bucks?
