Default 4L60E Transmission Question

I have an OBS 97 Z71 with the older 4L60E trans. Wanting to know what are the major differences from that older style to the newer ones that come in the trucks with the LS series engines? Also What would be the limit HP and TQ wise in both versions of this? I know that it is not very high, but trying to decide a few things here. Thanks in advance.

Yes there are differences. I know the module on the side and where the speed sensor are different. I think all of the mounting is the same.

I think the older ones have a one peice shell and the newer ones have a removeable tailshaft and bell housing.

no, the older 4l60e and 4l60 do not have the removable bell housing either. Only the ls style ones do.

right...I know about the bellhousing, and that the electronics are different, but, is there any differences on the internals? Would one be better than the other, and why?

All the electronics are exactly the same. Internals are basically the same. The newer ones have a different input shaft, stator tube, and a removable bell housing. Your year model trans is prone to breaking the reaction sun shell. If you can get your hands on something newer, I would look for an 04+, or if you can get your hands on a 4L65 or 4L70e that would be even better.

I am going to upgrade the trans later to a FLT 80E, but till then as long as I am somewhat easy on the truck i want to know if it can wait about 6 months from when it is on the road. Not really enough time to get it done till then due to my job, and having to move.

I'm not certain on the specific year model but pre '98 4l60e's had better internals. They changed from certain hardened parts to the plastic crap to save on cost.
