2nd Gear on 4l60e.
I was wondering if any one noticed this strange situation that seems to occur on 4l60e. You know when you take off with the transmission in drive the vehicle shifts threw the gears fine (like it should), but when you take off with the truck in second gear (column selected in second gear) it seems to start in second gear not in first. I even think you can here it shift from first to second when your at a stand still.
This seems to occur with my truck and my dad’s truck (2001 5.3 silverado ecsb, towing package, 38k miles). I was wondering if anyone noticed this. I’ve only done it a few times and that was because my dad was the first person who told me about how his truck did it. I know how some of you guys love the stock 4l60e but I assure you nothing is wrong with our transmissions.

GM has done this for years, A few of they're cars, etc have a button for "second gear start". To my knowledge this was supposed to be for better fuel economy when putting around town

Some cars and trucks have second gear start. Which is normal , Other cars when placed in second start in first then upshift, In the absence of somethng like a transgo hd2 most of not all cars and trucks when placed in manual 1 will still upshift to second when the RPM gets high enough,

I figured it had to be something normal. It just seems like it would be hard on the transmission which is why I never use it. My dad even told me that he thinks his transmission slips when starting in second. Thanks for clearing things up.

Its good for winter...helps you start out on ice etc without spinning due to lower overall gear. The NNBS trucks have so much torque management though its not an issue anymore...
