if you're going to go through the trouble of getting inside the take to remove it, why not put a new one in while youre there?

I just figured i have the good inline one so thought i could make use of it. dont really want to spend 300 plus for a new one and it wont be as good as the one i have.

You need to have one in the tank if you want to run one in line. I doubt just one on the feed line will be able to prime without something in the tank. In tank pumps are almost always better than in line ones.
