Talk about prochargers

i started my boosted career with a p1sc kit i picked up used for 2200 bucks , it had everything i need except a fuel pump and injectors. later i sold it and upgraded to a d1sc which is a amazing unit.i think the prochargers are great and make good power but if your looking for big power out of them 700+ hp they become very similar to a pain in the a$$ high maintenance wife.. they require allot of attention and custom fabrication to make work right.
i jumped ship this year to a turbo set up mainly because i was bored with the procharger set up and wanted a new challenge/project to work on and because i was tired of the belt and bracket flexing problems. any of you real procharger guys know what im talking about that are pushing their head units to the max. i was running a 10% od innovator west 8 rib kit with a riechard racing 3.5 pulley and my d1 was hitting 22-23 psi and at that point it became a nightmare to get everything aligned . at first i was shredding one rib at a time off the belt , got the pulleys dialed in then the belts started breaking right in half like you took a pair of scissors and cut it straight across . all i got to say after battling belt problems for a year is im glad i dont have to do that any more. i got my stock motor besides a cam kit to 11.1 @124 with the d1 at full kill and that was with a crappy 1.89 60ft so if i had a bigger stall to actually build boost off the line i know it could of hit mid 10's . i think the perfect stall would be around 3800 rpm mine was only hitting 27-2800 rpm's off the foot brake.
i still love the procharger and will be a procharger guy at heart but the turbo is a whole other animal with so many more variables that come into play. i know my turbo i have now has got to be making at least 150-200 more hp at 18psi then my d1 was making at 22 and it holds the power through the shifts also. oh and let me say a lil something about brake boosting ... OMG its awesome talk about a huge advantage for roll racing!
P.S. i built my own kit.

A truly complete turbo kit is pretty tough to build for 4k. At least one as complete as the pro chargers. Unless you fab your own kit.
hot pipes $1500
Ebay Universal intercooler $350
Cxracing 76mm turbo $400
8.1 marine injectors $400
Fuel pump $100
Bov/WG $400
Tuning $300
That is just the basics and we have already broke the $3100 mark without getting into the odds and ends. This is with a Chinese turbo and other eBay crap. I agree pro chargers are expensive, but turbos aren't near as cheap as people think.

-$100 for a ss oil feed line and fittings
-$70 for oil plate adapter
-$100 oil return line and fittings
-$70-150 turbo blanket
- $40 heat wrap

I agree having to buy a kit gets up there though.

I think the one thing about turbo's that makes them a better bang for the buck is it doesn't cost you anymore to make more horsepower. Meaning increasing boost costs nothing more than a boost controller. With the Prochargers' and TVS' your looking at pulley swaps, beefed up brackets and tensioners, wider 6/8/10 rib set-ups or even cog drives, etc...
So for the higher horsepower rigs your spending a lot to do it right.

I don't count the fuel pump, injectors, tuning to be part of the set up for either. That is a must for any decent power set ups. Spooly is correct. To do the PC right it is prob going to be more money in most peoples cases. You can piece a decent kit together for under 3500 if you can find the stuff. I think I have about 3k in my kit, that is including the IW 8 rib set up. I found my biggest issue to be finding a good belt. I was popping junk gator backs 3 times a month. Knock on wood I switched to a gates, have been running the same one over 3 years( time to change soon) With that comes a trade off. Yeh, you need diff pulleys for boost on a blower, but you don't need waste gates and boost controllers, oil lines. It's all in what your looking for, what you want to do. Turbo was a consideration at 1 time for me, but then I felt that it was just becoming so common that I would keep the PC just to be a little different.
