Default Budget build Turbo 5.3 s-10 -Suggestions?

Whats up guys im new here and this is my first post. Sounds like im in a AA meeting. lol. But anyways, Im starting a turbo 5.3 build in a 00 s10 single cab 2wd. Im just in the planning stages of the build and I know theres a few of you guys on here running turbo 5.3s, so im really just open to suggestions from yall, What problems you ran into, What parts you would suggest going with here or there, anything you think will help this thing turn out as successful as it can. As the title says this is going to be a budget build so trying to keep cost down and power up for the most part.

Ive got the motor and tranny already but thats it. (02 lm7/ TH400) Trying to decide what turbo setup to use. The truck will see the track occasionally but still needs to have good street manners as well. The turbo Im thinkin about going with right now is a BW s400-75, 83mm exducer, 1.10ar with a T6 flange. What do you guys think about this turbo choice? Will i be able to spool it on motor alone or will a need to spray it a little to get there? what setups are yall running on your 5.3 builds? Thanks in advance for the help.

Welcome!

A lot of the builds are using T4 style T70 and T76 turbos. On your s10 packaging is going to be an issue and might dictate one configuration working or fitting over another.

There are a handful of online calculators you can use to calculate airflow requirements of the compressor and then you can plot it against the map for each turbo and see which one will be operating in the highest efficiency zone. Running in lower efficiency regions adds more heat to the charge air. Heat is your enemy

I hope you have a loose idea of "budget build". T4 should be plenty for this build and will save money and space. My advice is to research and plan tirelessly and build once. g

An 83mm T6 flanged turbo on 323 is way to big for something you want to be a street strip vehicle. So many people use t4 flanges 70-76 with crazy success. I know it's out of your budget but I would run a Precision 6765. It will support over 1000 HP and on 323 CI would spool quick and have more than enough room for growth. Vipers, Supras, Grand National all type of vehicles use those either single or a pair and they are awesome. A friend has one on a 2jz in a 240 and on a little shot and race gas it's made 900+ and I don't think he's made it to the target range for the turbo yet

budget and turbo don't go well together. like said t4 70 or 76mm will be plenty of turbo and spool quick. good luck w/build

I'll be keeping a close watch on this thread. I'll be planning on going turbo when funds become available after my arm heals. I agree with using a 70 76 t4. They are large enough to handle anything you throw at it with a 5.3

not sure why people say you cant do a turbo kit for cheap, I have around$1000 in my setup...the main stuff....

ebay turbo....300 new to your door
wastgate........60
intercooler and piping kit, bov.....150
gauge....40
walbro 255 pump 100
injectors...$100....depending on how much fabing you want to do 350 bolt in.
hotside piping...100 ....
misc...a few bucks....here and there. tuning will cost some, but all in all a turbo kit isnt very much money if you can build it yourself.

I dont think that the 83 is too big if the intake, cam and heads. Its funny how people that shoot a big turbo down so fast. If you do some looking on other sites there are plenty of people running up to 88's on a 5.3. Considering that you are in an S-10 you can build more to a car style power band. My 2 cents.

I had a S480 with 83mm turbine wheel on my 5.7 and was a good turbo. By far the best sounding, if that maters,

Edit: BTW, the turbo he's talking about as a standard S400 (75mm) with the smaller 83mm turbine wheel and 1.10 a/r T6 housing

I'm not knocking bigger turbos at all. But if you are on a budget then the smaller turbos would be the way to go. Lil less money spent. It all just depends where you want the power to be at and how big Ur wallet is to support it
