I assume this is a VP truck? Need some info first.

Did you replace factory lift pump with another factory pump?

What was the reason for replacing(quit one day, low pressure, hard start, etc)

I have seen trucks do this when there is alot of air in the system, it will bleed out and start but takes a little time.

Which pump is it? If its a VP (1998.5-2002 24 valve) then if the lift pump went bad, then the injection pump is most likely toast. They are fuel lubricated and usually take a poo when the lift pump does. Do a google search for VP pump failure for more details. If it is a P-pump (1994+ 12 valve) Then you need to just bleed the ever-loving crap out of the injection lines. It can take a while to get all the air out.
