Drop or rims first?
#1
I am thinking about doing a 2-4 drop with all the hotchkis parts. then adding some 18x9.5 rims with 295/45/18 tires.... Same drop and tire combe as the original Silverado SS that was out in 99 or so...
I currently have 29" dia. tires on the truck now and it looks fine....the new combo is a 28" dia. Should I save and buy the rims and tires first? Or do the drop and drive around for awhile with the stock chrome steel wheels and 29" dia. tires?

same setup i was originally going to get.
i was told that a 9.5 up front would hurt the steering pieces. this was from a wheel and tire place in OKC. where i priced 20s.
btw what wheels/tires are you going with?
sportruck has a set of boyd coddington timeless 6s 18/9.5 for 1250 compared to 1595 or there abouts.
i would say drop first, but wheels very soon afterwards. that way you wont have a big gap.

The Timeless 6 in 18x9.5 with the goodyear eagle F1's.
I used to work at a discount tire and I am able to get a deal on the rims and tires. So I am in no rush to catch a sale elsewhere. But thank you for the notice. It is a good deal IMO.
As for the 9.5's up front....it can tend to cause more wear on your front end because the tires will hit more bumps and feel more of the road. But I want to be able to rotate my tires and I am not very concerned with the bigger rims up front. Doing a drop generally puts more stress on these parts as it is.......IMO

I oppted for rims first but had different tires than I now have. But I had them long enough to wear them down so... Since you are going with the 295/45 I would say do the drop first. That low of a tire will look kind of silly on a stock height truck IMO. Your current 29" dia tire will be just fine. I am running a 285/50/18 which are 29.2" and they fit perfect. BTW, a buddy of mine is running the 2/4 drop / 295/45 on 18x9.5 combo you are wanting. You can check it out at http://sshotrods.com/myrides/gmc/

Brandon,
Sorry about that... I was referring to billet aluminum. Didn't mean to state it as two different types.
Big Kid- That truck looks good. Wonder what it would look like black. But it almost makes me want to put some 20's on it. I dont want to drop the truck too much and think the 20's would look a little nicer than the 18's

With my truck I first did both and had to lift it back to stay in warranty dealer said lowering tore up u-joint. I would get wheels first since they make the biggest visual difference. I agree with keeping the same size to rotate, but I have rotated side to side on my old car every 5,000 to have big tires in the rear with no troubles. I got about 45,000 out of BF Goodrich T/A's.

Dover-
Only problem with that is that these tires are directional and in order to swap them correctly from side to side the tires have to be un-mounted and flipped in order to keep the tread pattern in the correct direction. Plus I would just prefer to have all the same size rims.
Brandon-
I have thought about 20's a lot. But I want to stay with a billet wheel and I think a 20" alum. wheel will be too easy to bend. Plus the tire prices jump up there really high compared to the 18's. But give it another year I am sure and the 20's will be what the 18's are now.

through looking at tire prices on tirerack and discount tire
18in tires are around 180 to 200+ for a 285 or a 295
for a goodyear tire in 275 or 285 they are about 130. this is the same style of tire that comes on the ford harley edition and i believe the new dodge (not sure though). sure its not as performance oriented as the yokahoma's or the F1s, or the nitto 555, but its still a larger foot print than the 235 i have now.
the boyd coddintton wheels are billet - the bitchin series timeless 6 20s 18s 22s 17s etc are 2 piece billet. what wheels were you talkinga bout that arent billet?

i agree with bigkid,
you dont want to have a low profile tire on a stock height truck, it would just look silly.
what i did was get the 2"/4" drop, then i bought some plain ol general 275/55 tires on the 16 inch "chevrolet trucks" rims..
it looked good even though i didnt have rims..
afer a couple of months and burning the general tires up, i bought some 18's / and they fit perfect. SO I SAY DROP FIRST
