Default Just bought a 4WD S10 but still want to race.

I just bought a 94 4wd S10(single cab) for my brother. He's into racing and wants to make it fast. What are our options as far as drivetrain? I have access to a few 350's and a LS1. But will the transfer case and the front driveline hold up to racing? I have the rear axle taken care of already. The trans would be a 4L60E right? If so, I have a source for a built one.
I've heard that I should just stick with the 4.3L, but ours is TBI and it's not too friendly as far as adding turbo or supercharger or even nitrous. Honestly, I'd like to just drop in a 350, but I'm just worried about the transmission and transfer case. Any suggestions? Can somebody point me in the right direction? I know I should've bought a 2WD, but this is what I could find/afford.

yes only major weakness is the rear end and the trans. in my lowly opinion.

I would do an LS1 swap with a 4L60E

I think it has a 8.5 rearend, so it might be ok as long as we don't make too much power. I was kinda thinkin' of swapping in a longtail Th350 since the parts are a little cheaper and it seems easier to work on.

while the 4wd would be sweet to have with a v8 its gonna be a PITA to work around. To keep the front diff its gonna need a different oil pan.

One thing you could do is look into swapping in the drivetrain from an awd tbss. The front diff works runs through the oil pan and maybe easier to work with..

I'd go with the LS1, I love these GENIII's. I grew up on SBC's and BBC's, but anything that I build from here on out will have a GENIII or IV...or V if and when that happens

Right now we're a little low on cash, so we're thinking of just spraying the 4.3L. The problem with that is the TBI system. There's not much [affordable] tuning for TBI. We could probably only run a small 100 wet shot. What would have more potential a nitrous 4.3L or a mild N/A 350? This will most likely be street raced rather than at the track.

Turn the distributor and kill some timing, done. What other tuning you need for a wet kit?

Sprayed 4.3 will be much cheaper and easier than swapping the 350 into the 4WD. A mild 350 will be thought as slow for a V8 s10. A equally fast sprayed 4.3 will be thought of as fast.

Since you have the 350 on hand, I would throw in a mild 350 on the bottle, done and done.

Well, I think I like the idea of a fast 4.3L now. I'll post up when we get it together in a few days.
