our trucks should be very similar erik. except the drivetrain. which i think will be a challenge as well for me.

the transmission had always been the limitation on the awd trucks. i think with a built 80e the other weak spots will show. im just hoping the front diff can hold because there isnt much i can do to add stregnth there.

my goals are a bit high but hopefully attainable, 1000awhp and 10's with ease. low 10's would be awesome and maybe for shits and giggles ill put it on a diet and see what happens.

I spent a lot of back and forth with some very knowledgeable tranny guys when I put my 80 in. They told me the next weak link would be the transfer case, and that they'd seen some very ugly samples out of 500hp trucks, and that since they can't be beefed up OR repaired, they would be my headache. That was my primary motivation for switching to 2WD.

On the other hand, the guy that bought my AWD transfer case did it so he had spares :) That's an alternate route.

Lemme tell ya... 1000AWHP is going to be easy with your build. 10's will still be fun to go after as traction will still be a challenge with that power with the AWD. You will likely be in the 1100 to 1200 ft/lb range -- woooooooooooooooo :)

yeah lets hope the case can stay together . i have also thought of going to the 4wd case with selectable drives. that way i can do burnouts as well. my cam specs look very similar to yours too erik. im sure i will be talking with you a bunch on this setup.

the old setup is actually still in the truck . the motor is being pulled in the next couple of weeks , the head gaskets need to be replaced and hopefully that is all, which i think it is since it runs fine. just trying to find a buyer for everything nitrous/engine/blower/trans.

I just hope your truck doesn't get burnt to the ground like Mark's. I don't know if we could take that again. Such an amazing build going to waist.:barf: On a positive note, I'm eager to see the outcome of another great build.

Why I-beam rods over h-beam rods?? Isn't h-beam rods stronger than I-beam rods??

no not always, the h beams are in most cases alot heavier . another thing is the material they are made from .

these rods are rated @ 1250 hp and are pretty lightweight so im sure they will work just fine.

usually the next best rod from here is an aluminum i beam rod which are in the 2000 hp range but are also in the 3k price range and have a limited life of about 50 passes before they need to be checked and or replaced .

im sure there are more pros' and cons but when researching rods this is what i came up with .

Very nice. Going to certainly get you into the 10's and possibly the top SSS spot on the list. I would still consider finding a frame setup from an 8600GVWR truck. I've found the whole trucks used for 3k or less on occasion as old work trucks. That would let you use a selectable and stronger transfercase that fully locks, a 4L80E would be a bolt in, the 9.25" front diff would bolt in for an option to an E-Locker, and a 9.5" 14 bolt rear diff. You could sell your 65E, transfercase, 4.10 gear diff's, and frame to make up for the cost. A selectable transfercase that will fully lock will be a big gain alone. Being able to heat some slicks or drag radials fully will help the rear tires alot in hooking especially since they get the most of the weight transfer.

thats not a bad idea, just switching to an 8 lug will kind of suck . i love my wheels and brakes.

not to mention the weight it will add. im trying to get this thing on a diet if anything.

im also still looking into changing transfercases to a selectable 4wd unit . whats different from the 1/2 ton 4wd t case to the 3/4 ton?

they made a 9.5" 14 bolt with 6 lug, also if you use the bigger front diff you could have custom CV's made to mate up

Hmmmm, I wonder who that was :hmmm:

Chase, somebody has to find the limits...when it breaks, build it stronger. That is my credo for my build...when the 65E lets go, the 80E will replace it...when the T-case lets go,. well you get the idea.

Anyway, Awesome parts selection. Keep the pictures flowing, I think I speak for everyone when I say we are going to enjoy watching this build come together! :chug:

I've got a 9.5" 14bolt and 6 lug wheels :)

Just match the rear housing to the frame and get 6 lug axles. Brakes might be a pita, but at the end of the day, you can always have a nascar machine shop make a custom set of rear rotors for you.

10bolt brakes will mate up to the 14b, some of them just need a spacer to push the backing plate out.

03-04-2009, 07:13 PM
i think therear swap would be easy for this drivetrain . but the rear end is the last thing i think will break . i bet the case or the front diff goes first. i guess im the guinea pig for this .

my engine builder is lagging , the block is at a shop in diego getting decked and head bolt holes drilled and tapped for the 1/2 studs.

im really not in a huge hurry because the lack of a place to pull the old motor and drop the new. not to mention summer is pretty much here and working on it in the day will suck . but you can bet your ass ill install it where ever it is as soon as i get the motor in hand.

ill post pictures of the motor assembly once the block is local.

Only bad thing about 6 bolts per cylinder is now that the heads are clamped down so good, you no longer have that safety net of pushing a headgasket if it detonates, much more likely to take out a ring land.

But...on the bright side you can keep the heads down once you start getting in the 20psi range

its over @ phillips house. we plan to pull the motor on the truck saturday , along with installing a new trans in his friends rcsb with a lq4 and a radix.

also have to do the knock sensors on the maro again.

if you want to come by chill and cook up some asada your more than welcome , its walking distance from my house.

That Red SS turbo charged? I see an A/A IC. What's up with those skinnies on the back??

Anyways, engine looks good! You can always use Abear for the valve covers if that suits your style, they are pretty good to deal with.

twins plan to be gt35's with ricks specs.

we are still going to run the twin 355's but @ low pressure , 30-35 psi @ idle boost referenced. they have recently tested the same system and it handled 1000rwhp with no meth . i am going to run meth and the biggest 100+ lb injectors low imp.

the red ss is phil's he is caddy pimpip on sss.
he has a really nice 408 on the way with some other goodies.
it had a radix on a lq9 until a piston quit life.

plan to make at least 1000awhp below 20 psi. dont know if i will push it past that. i want this one to live for a while and to enjoy driving it around. the good thing is from here on out progress should be good .

an idea of what it will look like, still thinking of what will happen with the fuel rails for color. and have to get the regulator/and all the rails / lines ran so i can slap it on when the motor is in. have to also figure out what to do as the intake wouldnt sit down without hitting the valley cover. i think it will need to be milled a bit to work. the balancer also stopped short so it had to come off and re approached.

Hey chase, check out this thread and Post #150 to be exact. I think this may be a way to solve your problem with your intake, at least that's how a few people have done it in the past in order to make these intakes fit better.

got the 370 out today and pressure washed the bay . need to tap the block for the knock sensors and drop it in the 427 .

sending the 370 to get inspected, looks like i lost only one head gaskets.

had to get a custom cut valley cover for the sheet metal intake . have to cut the a/c bracket to make fit.

need to find a place that does anodizing , going to do the fuel rails, alternator, tb, alt bracket and some other small pieces.

hydroboost install will commence next week along with progress pictures.

the vortech , intake manifold will all be cleaned up and posted for sale .

btw dusty , cam specs arent crazy.

236/230 6xx/6xx lift and a 114-115 lsa.

thanks guys spent about 4 hours on today after a 9 hour day . lotta heat and im tired as hell.

got the hydroboost in , that was a pita replacing the brake pedal . got the intercooler off , old 370 back to get freshened up.

rails to the anodizer. cleaned up some wiring and thats about it. spending lots of time in the decents of the engine bay , pretty comfy down there.

a couple pics today . got the antiseize so i could use some stainless buttom heads on the valley cover to help clear the intake. also for some smart reason i used allen head bolts and getting them tight is a two man job for sure. for anyone else doing the hydroboost install , getting off the pedal sucks , a 18mm ratchet wrench and a 3/8 drive with 18mm shallow w/4 inch extension is key. still a pita if your a bigger person . also the ss master cylinder works just fine with the hydroboost.

did all the fuel rails plumbing and got the rails back from anodizing , injectors are in and the intake is ready to bolt on .

waiting on the knock sensor/cam sensor harness. making new battery cables tomorrow and thats pretty much it . the motor may be put in this weekend. i will be leaving for arizona for 4 days tomorrow so progress will sease for the 4th.

ran into a little problem , the way i have the regulator wont work as it hits the firewall so im going to bend some hardline up and make my own fittings on the rear passenger rail to push the regulator back a little . also going to have to cut the driver side fuel rail down to near the injector and cut a -8 an fitting and weld it to the rail . then use a 90 -8 female to hose then to the y. this is with the stock 105 amp alt , going to pick mine up tomorrow and make sure it will have a shot as its even bigger but should work . below you can see my issue with the smaller alt.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b351/04chase/DSC02733.jpg

basically just have to , install alt headers, plum the fuel , i made all new battery cables that are ready to install. plum the wiring, new knock sensor/cam sensor harness. electric water pump . finish the hydroboost which should be cake. and all the little b/s . hope to have it fired by this weekend if im lucky .

well got the fuel rails all figured out had to use a 90- bulkhead near the alternator and a bulk head on the rear to move the fpr out from hitting the back of the intake and still maintaining to clear the firewall. i only had about 1/2 inch to play with back there.

I feel the truck is more than capable of mid 10's with everything dialed in and not being kicked out for safety reasons. Depending on boost, 850RWHP could be the low end. Depends what Chase is building it for though really. I assume it is a "show and go" rather than a complete race truck.

yeah that was also a reason for me going to a tie bar lifter.

here is another little update

man the little things take forever. i keep saying this weekend but run into more things that need to be done. i didnt like the way the coil brackets were mounted to the covers so i made some changes. i tapped the braket mount in a different location so that i could move the coils up and not block the engraving as much . this way you can see the covers and hise some wiring behind them . below you can see how they were supposed to be mounted and now how they are mounted

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b351/04chase/DSC02750.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b351/04chase/valvecoverinstalled.jpg

and not to big on trashing companies , so i wont ill just say that the brackets for the coils were wrong and i was told how i placed an order for ls2 coils , but i said truck coils . followed by truck coils and ls2 coils are the same. i didnt want to wait for me to send these back and wait another 3-4 weeks for the anodizing to get finished. i dont have that kind of time right now . so i ended up buying a set of ls2 coils for a whopping amount of cash . supposedly these have a better spark . i just hope that 20+ psi works with them .

The cam gear in your picture has a 1x cam reluctor on there. That should be correct for your truck. According to the GM Service Information (SI) the truck should run with this code set and without the cam sensor working correctly. It also shows that the engine should be running to set this code. I would check with your engine builder to make sure that he put the correct crank reluctor on the crank. If it had the wrong crank reluctor the pcm would see more rpm that is actually there thinking the engine is running and allowing the cam sensor code to set. Here are some things to check for if you do have a cam sensor issue. You could also log the cranking rpm with HPT with enough battery power to be able to see how high it's showing. If cranking rpm shows normal the reluctor should be fine. Just something to check into.

Camshaft reluctor ring damage
The sensor coming in contact with the reluctor ring
Foreign material passing between the sensor and the reluctor ring
Excessive camshaft end-play
Wiring routed too close to secondary ignition components

i dont think he would have changed the reluctor wheel. it came on the crank i ordered.

im going to get the builder to look at it and inspect it. ill also log some rpms when cranking .what rpm do you usually see when cranking? if its the wrong reluctor ill see double that correct?

The standard reluctor is 24x for a Gen III. The Gen IV is a 58x. It will be slightly more than double. Normal cranking rpm is 300-400rpm round about.

here is a pic of the cam gear and the pic of the tan sensor , need to check on compadibility.

Why dont you get some spark plug looms like a LT1 uses and get some longer plug wires and route it around the valve covers and they wont be covered at all. Just a thought good luck

ive thought about that , just waiting to see what rick will end up doing when the turbos heat comes into play. i would really like to showcase the valve covers but the turbos take priority in the bling. after seeing magnuson's chrome powder coat. i may end up using that if it can withstand the heat. im also hoping to have a d-max with a trailer come years end so long trips with this thing will be a thing of the past.

also so i have to stop paying tow trucks. btw AAA premium kicks ass. 4x 100 miles tow's a year and a single 200 mile tow for 135 bucks aint bad.

The chop is because of the compression with that much cam. The cam isn't big compared to what some others are running, but with a 9:1 motor it's alot of cam even with 7.0L's.

if i can keep it awd its going to be a monster on the street which is my goal . i know im pushing it but if i can get it to dip into the low 10's and keep it awd i have reached my goal . anything you can drive to the track run low 10s and then tow your race car home is something pretty dam unique.

on a side not i met a guy yesterday while out working in yucaipa that has an 06-07 h2 hummer with a durty max allison swap runs on biodiesel and looks freaking awesome. Its lifted up a bit( i think about 6-7 lift on 37's. The thing that got me was the guy said he smoked his friends z06 c6 on the freeway so i let him know i had a truck that would probably be a good race in a few months . he asked if it was diesel ? I said nope gas, he doesent think it will stand a chance. definatly another unique truck though so i gave him some props on having something different , something gm should have made from the factory.

i plan to push it pretty hard mark id really to like to go for 9's and keep it awd. i wish your truck would have made it through the fire to see if it would hold up over time , did you ever get to really get on it with high boost ? the nice thing is the QS denali already had a stronger rear end to start with . though i would guess the rear will hold up im worried about the front end . time will tell. the fact that 2wd will also mean less weight and less drivetrain loss. i think going 2wd would also be a huge benefit for going 9's. it wont be a track only truck so the awd will be staying for now.

Still go a ways to go on it bro. I am pretty much a one man shop in this economy right now. So we still have to get an Intercooler made, which I am almost done designing and choosing a builder for it. Then we need to build the cold side stuff, pick a color for anodizing. Send the hot stuff out to be coated. Clean up all the wiring in the truck because its a mess. So its pretty much all the little things that will take a ton of time now.
