I was thinking about doing the 14 bolt swap, but after thinking about it..... I figured just do it once... So I went with a Moser fab 9 housing with 35 spline axles and a nodular center section. I figured I would also have the suspension upgraded also, so I dropped it off at DB Rods to have it 4 linked and add a fuel cell. It should be pretty cool when its all done. Here are some teaser pics of it getting started.

I'm just wondering, but with what I've seen with the rearends in these trucks what would be the best rearend to put in one of these trucks? I mean do it once and be over with it. Obviously a 10-bolt won't hold up to too much power, then there is the 14-bolt, 9 inch ford, dana 60. Also, I take it 4-linking the rear would be the best bet as well?
bansheerider44
11-26-2008, 07:13 PM
its just what you want, Ive run 9" rears and have never had one fail on me, its alot lighter than a 14 bolt, and it proven and super easy to change gears out in. But as far as strength its not the only option, I almost went with a upgraded 12 bolt, but decided to stick with the 9''. just my .02
2004SSS
11-26-2008, 07:35 PM
yeah id go 9 inch over a 14 bolt for weight but the 14 bolt would be alot easier of a swap . a 9 inch requres alot more fab work but if your going to do a 4 link its actually less work .
nice setup you have going , the fact you can get the 6 bolt axles is sweet. one day i may have to do something similar.

I would just like to offer up some freindly advice.
When It's all said and done, I hope you have that housing checked for straightness. Welding brackets on like that can distort the housing.... The housing ends are that last thing that are supposed to be welded on. If the ends are out of alignment and you have a toe in or out condition It will slow the car or truck down. Not to mention the premature wear on everything else...
On a side note, Its nice to see you making some progress and sharing it with others. I have also been thinking of doing a 4 link of some sort. Just not sure on wich way I am going to do it yet...

Regency04 & Banshee, u guys are doin some nice setups. No worries for sure.
Sierra1320 as far as strength. The Dana60 is stronger than a 9". Too bad it's very heavy. Banshee said it best; the 9" has been proven. Plus, many gearsets to pick from, & serviceability.
Where's the 14 bolt fits amongst the other 2? Well, from reading the other posts, they're heavy. I usu. equate heavy to being strong. I forgot how big the ring gear is on a 14 bolt. W/ some fab work, some $, tho... u can put whatever rear u prefer.

i hope your place knows what its doing and you dont go through what i did with my 96. i did a ladder bar coilover set up and my truck hooks worse! no weight tranfer, wrong coils were picked, panhard bar put in on a angle and between that and the bars it binds up. my rear end is 1.5 inchs farther back then it was before. my pinion angle is insanely stupid, the angle on the bar is retarded. its benn a nightmare. im fixing to redo it in the next month or so. with wrinkle walls and a 120lb spring its helped it a lot but im gonna half to redo it ALL. i thought the shop was reputable to and sees nothing wrong with it and my longer wheelbase helps with handle... cause i built it to take corners right!!!!

it might be a little below the roll pan, but will all be powdercoated black so wont stand out if its a little low.
Shop has done many of these 4 link setups on new trucks with many satisfied customers. Im not worried about that.

A reputable shop is everything, esp. w/ suspension. U want to hook & go straight. But since you're a corner-burner, no worries, right?:D
BTW, I know someone in FL that had his truck bagged by what he thought was a reputable shop. IIRC, after spendin alot of $$ W/ THEM, HE HAD TO TAKE SOMEWHERE ELSE, & have it done right!!!:mad: Sorry to hear of your problems, but it sounds like banshee is in good hands.
FastnBlu I just looked through a few websites and would the Dynatrac rearend be a direct bolt in swap? Aside from getting a new driveshaft.
I was unfamiliar w/ that name til I read bout them. I say call them & ask some Q's. That 1 setup they offer sounds stout, the Pro80. Prolly more than most need. Comes w/ 35 or 37 spline axles. But the other stuff, sounds like it's based on a Dana60. I like that they do it in U.S. & take a great deal of pride in work. Largely, sounds geared to a offroad customer, but they do it to your liking. How much? A person doesn't want to go & get a rearend that is so heavy, it's costing ETs, but one stronger to take the abuse they'll put it thru. Decide carefully.
Banshee, sounds like 1000 hp is the goal! INSANE! Sorry, wasn't tryin to threadjack.

First of all, that is some bad ass welding and fab work.
I have a question about installing 4-links. Is there a specific height that the chassis brackets need to mounted in relation to the axle brackets?
Example: Do you mount the brackets level based on the bottom holes or top holes or some other combination of holes?
I have searched for hours on the net trying to find the answer to this question to no avail.

man i wish i could help you, i have no clue on 4 link, thats why Im having it done by a pro. I know the Door slammers chassis book covers alot on setup.
on the build, it was all sent to the powder coater this morning and should be back in a day or so. I will post some finished pics soon. ordered my drive shaft from dennys and it is a week or two out, but i will get some runs in asap.

:secret2: SHHHHH It's VODO!!!!
Each 4 link is different and so is every car/truck. Basically the 4 link is set up around the Vehical being set at ride height. What ever combination best suits that vehicals needs to transfer the weight properly.
Dave Morgan's door slammer book is ok but Try The Jerry Bickel book. It's easyer to under stand and aply. :D
Sorry for the wait, Its been together for a couple weeks now. Drives great and handles awesome. It feels much better under power. I will be doing some track testing soon.

the guy that put it in had to build it for his set up and their is heims in the front you can see in the pic. it stuffens it up more with bushings just more for a pain in the rear.
this is my opinion and what i was told by a guy that has is own shop.
