Now that I've actually started putting things back together instead of tearing them apart, I figured I'd consolidate all my crap into one thread.

For those that don't know what happened, I lost #7 piston. Best we can figure is that poor cooling around #7 caused the piston to heat up too much and expand in the bore. Motor came out and went back to Rex and Richard at WCCH.

I'm also taking this opportunity to do some more upgrading. I'll post pics as I progress. Here's what I have so far:

New fuel setup will be a -8 main feed line stock evap line and stock return line. I pulled the trans a few nights ago to remove the stock feed line and run the new -8 line. It has not yet been connected at either end...waiting on the intake manifold for the engine end and waiting to get all the crap out of the bed so I can lift it and finish up the fuel bucket end.

Here's where it will come out of the tank

..and up into the engine bay
http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc22/thunder550/FuelSystem/IMG_1749.jpg

On the fuel tank side, I want to run a -6 line to each fuel pump, then bring them together into a Y. Undecided so far if the Y will be inside the tank or outside.

Engine side, -8 main line will split into a Y and run a -6 line to the rear of each fuel rail. Lines will come out the front, meet at the FPR, then connect to the stock return line and back to the tank. here is the basic setup, sans a few parts (rails and one 90* fitting)

Reinstalled the trans yesterday and converted the cooler lines to all AN to get rid of the clusterf**k of splices between AN and hard line I had in there before. The old hard lines also rubbed my idler arm when turning. This should be much better.

1/4" pipe to -6AN fittings in the trans, 90* -6AN to hose barb, -6 pushlock hose

New plans also include a Vic Jr intake manifold, 4 barrel throttle body, carb hat, much cleaning and re-wiring to clean things up, coil relocation, and SBC-looking valve covers. I want my engine to actually be worth showing off for a change....never had that before :)

Do you not run your tranny cooler in series with your radiator?

I replaced the radiator awhile back and got one without the trans cooler.

looks like you've got a good start on it but a whole Lotta work to do. what is the advantage of the 4 barrel TB?
I guess it's true that every dark cloud has that silver lining. what's really cool is that you are going to have that bay looking like you want it. Don't take too many short cuts and make it purty!

BTW, how in the blue $^*% did you manage to keep your nails so nice and clean :gay: is that a hobbit thang?

I did the same thing with my trans lines.. Pushlok FTW!!

If i were you i would put the "Y" on the outside of the tank, just incase it happens to leak?

I guess it really depends on how much room I have to work with. If there's not much room I may be forced to run a single -8 out of the tank.

Change of plans for the fuel pump connection. I spoke with Lonnie of Lonnie's Performance and he said there is no reason to run new lines into the tank, the run is so short that upgrading the lines probably won't make a difference at all. Looks like I'll be leaving the stock bucket alone, and running an adapter like this to mate up to my steel braided lines.

Once you fill the master cylinder with fluid start pumping the brake pedal once and while when you are working on the truck. I don't know if I messed up by not bench bleeding the master cylinder, but mine took a long time to get the air out up top. Once that air was gone bleeding the lines was quick.

I got to use them for a few days....seems like they will work well. The smoothed out the ride a lot in the rear, but I never got a chance to load the back end up and see how they do. I'm looking forward to hooking up the boat and towing with the bags.

Obviously I can't tell how soft those bump stops are, but you are riding pretty close to them. If they are too firm, I'm running belltech 4920 foam bump stops front and rear and love them. Soft and squishy with no hard bottoming out, just a progressive stop. Just an idea. Also you could get rid of that bump stop perch for some more travel. Looking good, outta be up in no time!:chug:

thunder550
06-03-2008, 11:26 AM
Those BS's are Belltech 4922 and 4923. Bill seems to like his, so I'm hoping that these will do well. I think the airbags in the back will help give everything a very progressive spring rate, even riding as close to the stops as I am. If not, like you said, I can just pull the mounts and get some more travel. The thing I am most worried about is the physical size of the fronts...I just hope that they don't compress enough to allow the mount to contact the LCA.

I stopped by Lowe's on my lunch break and bought the materials to make my coil brackets. I'm modeling my setup after Quik's, except that I'm going to add more allthread so the bottoms of the coils are supported as well. thunder550

Wasn't bad at all actually. Maybe a 2-3 hour job. Biggest PITA was drilling the new hole for the different bolt pattern and widening the hole for the new master to go through the firewall. Other than that, it's all bolting and unbolting stuff.

Just for my clarification. The fittings on the trans is 1\4 NPT. I fixing to redo my lines as well. Ive understood the 60e and 80e use the same fittings coming out????? thanks.

Is Rex gonna do the rebuild as well.

I've heard that you can take them to .080 over, but I don't think I'd feel comfortable that far over.

Got the plug wires all cut and routed today. I used MSD 8.5mm superconductor wires. I wanted blue, but they only make this kind in red and black.

This setup consists of a universal LT1 kit, a set of straight plug boots (the LT1 kit comes with 90's), and a Moroso separator kit for a Ford V8. I just had to drill out the holes on the separator mounting brackets, otherwise everything fits very well.

More stuff done today...dropped Kyle's dummy motor in to check fitment of the coil pack brackets and wires and to start hacking up the wiring harness.

I had to make a few minor changes to the coil pack bracket to get it to fit comfortably, and had to change how the wires were routed in the back. It fits though :)

Also pulled the engine harness apart so I could rearrange it to hide it as much as possible. Spent about 10 hours on it today...wiring is a bitch! I would have been ok to keep going but my knees were killing me. I'm getting old :(

Not much to update so far. Got back on Sunday. Rex picked up the block from the machine shop and it had a ding on the deck, so it had to go back to clean that up. He got it back yesterday, started assembling it today, and apparently there's a groove in one of the crank journals so it has to go back to the shop and get re-ground. :bang:

Richard should be about done with the portwork on the new manifold by now...hoping that he ships it today so I can have it for the weekend and get the fuel line plumbing done.

Only other progress to report is the windshield washer/meth tank situation. I had an ugly washer fluid tank mounted to the firewall, since I converted my stock washer tank to a meth tank. Kyle had the idea of running two factory tanks, once on each side, so Monday night I stuffed another washer tank into the passenger side front, kind of a direct mirror of where the stock tank goes on the driver's side. I now have a full size tank for the washer fluid, and a full size tank for the meth :) Will take a few pics tonight when I get home.

thunder550
06-25-2008, 09:23 PM
Intercooler piping clears fine....it goes around the bracket, not through it.

Here's some pics with the new Airaid cold air box I put in...there was already a notch in the corner that clears the neck on the tank perfectly. The only interference is between the air filter and the washer tank. They touch, but the filter still fits.

Sorry Eric, didn't think anyone over there was following my thread, except for the few of you who know what I'm up to anyway :P

Richard@WCCH was kind enough to ship my manifold to me overnight so I'd have it to work on this weekend. I dropped Kyle's 4.8 into my truck since it was already hanging from the hoist, cut the remainder of the fuel lines, and got the upper engine harness and injector plugs all sorted out. I'm going to have to change a few fittings due to clearance issues, but that's no big deal. I also don't think that my coil brackets are going to fit, but I have another idea for that, so we'll see what happens there.

Sitting on top of Kyle's new motor, making him jealous :jest:

After the upper engine harness is all situated. I still need to get some wire loom, but it's hidden pretty well under the manifold. You can see the clearance issues I ran into with the alternator as well. The line for the return is cut and laying on the valley cover, but I can't use the straight hose end that I bought for the return. I'll have to pick up a 45 or 90 fitting for it.

Are you planning on running two passenger side valve covers with breathers or the stock set up?
Progress looks great considering how recent you went down and all.

It's a set of GM Performance Parts valve covers that say Chevrolet and have the bowtie on them. I'm trying to find a pic online but haven't been successful yet. They look a lot cleaner and have no provisions for coil pack brackets.

Well I talked to Quik over on ls1truck and he said that I can still use the ones I made if I modified them a little bit to work like his do. I'll give that a shot before I scrap the idea and do something else.

There's an o-ring that goes around the lip on the throttle body to seal it. You can see it in this pic

Hope that single O-Ring is enough to seal it up under boost. You may want to find a O-Ring that rated for higher temps so it doesn't go all gooy on you from the meth and heat.

Yep! Trying to hide as much wiring as possible.

Dam it looks nice. Like the valve covers.

I have an LS6 valley cover that will be connected to manifold vacuum. Other than that, I'll just be running two breathers in the valve covers.

I like the old school look of the plug wires.. Nice and clean.

That's the goal...trying to make it look like an old SBC. I've already had a few people ask why I switched to a carb :jest:

I made sure to lube the rubber rings before I tightened them down. Coils are back behind the engine, between the back of the heads and the firewall. I have a rat's nest of wiring back there too, but it looks like it will be tucked away far enough that it's not going to be too pronounced. I hope.

Once I hooked those up, it fired on the second try :)

She's almost streetable. Started her up and ran for about 5-10 mins last night. Filled the coolant tank, filled the p/s reservoir. Still need a couple rubber/silicon adapters for the cold air side and a couple other real small things. She moved back into the garage under her own power :) Brakes felt real squishy - may have to bleed again, depending on how my first spin around the block goes. Gotta top off trans fluid, check oil level, re-check coolant level, check p/s level again, and connect last two pieces of cold air side and she should be ready for her first little drive (oh, and she needs a wash in the worst way!!). Not sure how far I'll get tonight - gotta go do something with the girl later, then off to Vegas for the weekend. It might be Sunday or Monday before I get to take the truck for a spin.

That would be an LS6 valley cover :)

Update....she's all done! Runs and drives. Tried to drive it last night but I think something in the new p/s pump that I got with the hydroboost setup is geared differently or something. The steering and brakes SUCK at idle. Once the revs come up a little bit everything works great, but at idle I have no power steering and no power brakes. I'll probably end up swapping my stock power steering pump back on when I get back from Vegas on Monday.

I just took it around the block a couple times. Feels real torquey right off idle. I dunno if it's because of the different ramp rate on the new throttle body or what...I thought it would feel like a dog off idle with the Vic Jr but it feels great! Can't wait to get the steering and brakes worked out and take her out on the road!! :burn:

Chris,

I don't know what your plans are for the cold air intake, but if you're planning on re-doing it all you may want to consider putting as long and as straight a section of pipe in front of the turbo as possible. Maybe go all the way up to the radiator before turning it down. It'll only make a marginal difference, but it does help eliminate surge issues and improve flow slightly.

And we all know you like your pipes long and straight...:gay:

Looks good dude!

Changed to a P/S pump specific for the HB setup. It has the additional return line. PS and brakes good at idle ~650 rpm.

I like the AEM DryFlow (which you have on the turbo) much better than the K&N

Looks awesome man!

Are you gonna eventually fab an air tube from the turbo over to the air box?
That would be a nice touch that should have noticeable positive results...
it wouldn't be much of a bend at all and a short distance as well...
the box would block alot of underhood heat and dirt...
if it had a duct running to it from below it would be even better...

Is that your original felt underhood protector?

wow Chris, looks really good now, I like how the wires are hidden behind the motor now too. Looks real clean. cant wait to see what it'll do

Accutaly, that temp filer on the turbo is a $22 cheapy I bought a AZ, lol. He's gona do just like I did here.

kyle or chris. Do u like the turbo blankets, or is there an added benefit.

Keeps heat out from under the hood from melting stuff and Chris truck from catching in fire :engarde: :jest:

Ryan

I'm planning on just putting an elbow on it to go straight into the airbox over there on the passenger side. I don't really have much room for a straight pipe unfortunately :( And don't you talk about my pipes like that!!!

Yes, I'm going to put an elbow on there, I wasn't planning on the filter + filter being permanent :jest:

That's not my original hood liner...mine was singed from three separate engine fires and was starting to fall apart, so I bought a new one.

Why the clutch fan?

As David explained, I was having overheating issues when towing here in the summer. I also didn't want the extra drain on the electrical system. I haven't noticed much of a difference without them....the clutch rarely locks up on the fan anyway. The e-fans weren't worth it IMO.

Thanks man, me either!!

Thanks bud! You too can have a filter for your filter, if you really want!

Like Kyle said, they keep the heat away from the rest of the nearby engine/electrical components. I will never run without one again.

Did you figure out why your hydraboost wasnt working exactly right???

By the way you did a good job with hiding the coils and most of the wire harness...:chug::chug:

I think there was just air left in the lines. I put about 30 miles on the truck last night and everything seems to be working fine now.

That's all fine and great about the brakes and all but what about the truck! How's she running and how does it feel? How much boost you running and how's the delivery?

Well truck feels good, other than having no a/c at the moment. Hopefully that will be fixed before the end of the week. I haven't laid into it yet, gotta get a couple hundred miles on the clock before I'm ready for that.

I parked it at Lowe's earlier and came outside to some coolant on the ground....I have no idea where it came from but my coolant tank was down a little bit so I know it was mine. Need to find that....also, the baffled grommets that I put in the valve covers to keep oil out of the breathers have already loosened up enough to let oil seep out from under them, so I need to remedy that.

Feels good so far though! Has much better throttle response and low end grunt than I was expecting :D

Any updates?.........where is the coolant coming from, hows it running, has it caught on fire, did Kyle have to tow it anywhere..............whats up?

All the leaks are fixed...coolant leak was coming from a loose plug in the rear passenger head (THANKS RICHARD!!! :jest: ), had a power steering leak coming from the hydroboost brake booster. Also had an oil leak from the new valve covers, since they have no baffles. I tightened the coolant plug, and that leak was fixed. Replaced the brake booster, PS leak fixed. Swapped the stock valve covers back temporarily, that leak is fixed.

Motor is running well, got just shy of 500 miles on her now. I changed the oil this afternoon, everything looked good. Put 15-50 Mobil 1 synthetic in (broke her in with dino straight 40) per Rex's recommendation.

Ordered a new wideband late last week. My serial output on the LC-1 works intermittently, and I'm sick of dealing with it. I bought a PLX and a digital gauge to go with it. No more dealing with ground offsets and moody LC-1 hardware. Should be here soon. After that, it's time to tune her up and start laying into it some. The tune is way rich right now...I've gone WOT now a few times up to about 4000 RPM, and the wideband gauge I have bottoms out at 10.0:1.

No, it hasn't caught fire, and no, it hasn't had to be towed home :jest:

It was doing really well with the smoking issue that I've been having (I think it's the turbo) until today, and now it's smoking almost constantly at idle. My roommate bought the identical turbo to mine in the Turbonetics brand...mine is a Precision. I'm gonna swap his onto my motor and run it for a few days and see if that solves it. If so, time for a new or rebuilt turbo.

Glad to see she hasn't caught on fire or had to be towed. That sucks about the turbo leaking, especially since precision is so backed up on repairs it isnt even funny. I have two friends of mine that recently sent their turbos off and one took two months to get back the other has had his off to them for over three months and still hasnt gotten it back. One of them has a shop and he has contacted them about it and they told him they only have one guy doing repairs right now, and that is what the hold up is.

Sounds promising Chris, except for the turbo part! How's the butt dyno feeling on this rebuilt set up on a base rich tune and yada yada yada. Feels good? Torque down low? Spool time, etc...

thunder550

If swapping the turbo solves the problem I'll just go buy another one, send mine off for repair, and sell it when it comes back. We'll see.

Feels good so far. Need to get my new wideband in and fix the oil burning issue before I feel comfortable laying into it too much more. Soon, hopefully. Has more low RPM torque than I was expecting. Spool time is about the same as before, probably around 2700 or so for full boost. I can make a couple psi cruising along at about 2000 in 4th with the converter locked.

Which turbo are you running? (I've forgotten already).
