ALRIGHT! Good score. Any reason for pulling the head? Did the engine run before?

What are your plans? Tranny? Fuel lines?

Best of luck, its worth every penny!

They told me it came from a wrecked truck 2000 model....i looked under the valve covers and it looks like whoever owned it didnt maintain it very well.... you can tell it has been sitting quite awhile also...but the motor spins! I was gonna make it a 5.7 but im tryin to stay on a budget and the plan now is to tear it down have the block cleaned and honed then just re-ring it and may have them check the crank and im gonna just put some fresh bearings in it! Mainly i just want it to be a fresh motor cause i do plan to put a little spray on it! I didnt get a chance to take it apart this weekend but i plan on starting tommarow so i can get it to the machine shop ASAP!

I plan to do milled 243 heads, and TR220 cam, gonna get a 4l60e and have it built up nicely! As far as getting the fuel to it...im not 100% sure on what im gonna do...might mount a fuel cell between the frame where the spare tire goes and make a nice little fuel door flush in the bottom of the bed and run an inline pump.....idk yet tho we'll see how it goes!

I know Fbody headers don't fit without lifting the motor or setting it way back in the firewall, I was gonna try truck headers but haven't got around to it.

I think 1BADC10 tried a set of nbs truck pacesetter headers and they would not work. I have seen a set of hooker LS1 shorty headers that look really good that work on these trucks, but nothing for LT's yet.

Yes, exhaust is pretty tricky and frustrating. I was fortunate and had several options sitting in front of me, but none worked cleanly. I tried truck headers, but only the passengers side fit. Then I tried truck manifolds, the passenger side wouldn't fit without trimming the EGR port, but it looked like crap. Then I tried F-body headers and they needed the frame trimmed in several places. I also had my motor setback 1", so that was a factor too. I'd suggest some type of shorties or even look into ZO6 manifolds.

What color are you painting the engine?

Do you have an 87 tank? I have one left with a sending unit still in it. Passengers side I believe. I used my 79 tank, with the 87 sending unit. So far havnt ran it low enough to worry about splash from lack of baffles.

Just make sure you use fuel injection rated hoses to interface with any hard lines (if using that). I replaced the bulk of those hoses except the ones that connect to the sending unit. I think those are collapsing when tank level is lower than half. When fuel sloshes around, the engine dies, and doesn't start for ~15 minutes. Just one of those things I hadn't gotten around to changing.

I think those are collapsing when tank level is lower than half. When fuel sloshes around, the engine dies, and doesn't start for ~15 minutes. Just one of those things I hadn't gotten around to changing.

check out my thread of my 6.0/4l80e
http://www.fullsizechevy.com/forums/general-discussion/classics/326430-out-old-new-6-0-a-2.html
had to move xmember to rear holes, and add a small "tongue". Stock linkage did not work, I'm sure someone with a welder could get it to work...
I went with lokar shift linkage, actually going to put the lokar stuff in today.

Yes sir they are the stock pressed rods......I was just wondering because I read where you talked about having trouble with the pin locks. You don't want to run the locks with a pressed pin.

chevyguy7802

stock48
06-30-2008, 03:38 PM
Yea we had trouble cause the clips were such a tight fit into the grooves of the pistons where they sit.........You better call mahle and check on that. Those locks are for a bushed rod with a floating pin. If you run them with a pressed rod it will place the wristpin in a bind. You need to get those locks out of there. Just don't want to see you have problems.

Im 100% sure the motor will be ok....I know that I didnt have to have them, but I guess it doesnt hurt to have added security....

Well the problem is if you don't have the wrist pin perfectly centered in the rod, the pin will push against the clip until it brakes it or pushes it out. You REALLY should remove them! It's not extra security, it Russian Roulette!

chevyguy7802
07-01-2008, 02:51 PM

stock48
07-02-2008, 02:39 AM
They were centered perfectly,my machine shop pressed them on the rods for me.....The rod still needs to be able to float in the piston, weather it's a pressed pin floating in the piston, or a bushed rod floating on a locked pin. It doesn't matter how centered the rod is on the pin, the pin still has to be able to move in the piston:judge::judge::judge::judge::judge:. Your making a BIG mistake if you leave those locks in there. I won't say any more about it. J

chevyguy7802
07-02-2008, 12:00 PM
There's is plenty of clearance, every piston that I put into the motor had plenty of play left to right.....especially when I dropped them in the bore and center it on the crank the wrist pin is not even going to get close to the clips.

New wheels. Cool. They are a loven or hatem. I like the Rally's my self. But Im old school. They might look better to me with some side angle shots to show the depth of the wheels.

Keep up the good work on the swap! I have been racking up miles on the 79 this summer. Ate up a 07 Eclipse (240hp CAI, fat Folgers pipe off the back ) this past thursday. From a role, he tried to pass, and I let it have it, I let off well into 3rd gear. ( no speedo yet ) and let him past once I tapped my brakes. I had 6-7 lengths on him. A couple miles later he pulled into a drive way, and I stopped to chat, he was EMBARASSED!! He couldn't figure out how an old carburated flat black beater truck ate his lunch that easy! Then I opened the hood! He about chit his pants! The look on his face was worth a million. He said I lifted about 110mph. The old truck had a LOT left in it! It was fun!

Cant wait to hear your stories!

Alright time for a update!!!!

Motor and trans are currently in the truck!:chug:

As long as I waited to get my crank spacer and bolts for the 80e I didnt even
need them......Had my dad write up a program then drilled the 5.3 flexplate
to the 80e bolt pattern.....I put the spacer and flexplate then we go put the tranny on and it was bindin up:mad:......I was like damn I must have not got the verter all the way in double checked it and the verter was all the way in......we traced it to the crank spacer......and the 5.3 flexplate is dished in the middle.....so I took the spacer off and it all went together easy!
So im assuming the 6.0 flexplate is flat.....

I will get some pics up tommarow!:D

Yea im using a walbro 255 intank pump,87' model fuel tank and sending unit.
Im also going to be running a racetronix pump harness thats for a buick grand

Here are some pics......

I modified the stock power steering line that cam with with motor, the newer trucks use a o-ring type seal where mine uses a flare type....all I did was cut off the one off my truck line and the newer truck line, use my fitting off the old truck and flare it. Here is a pic.http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r146/chevyguy7802/10.jpg

For the crossmember I took my trans mount off my old th350 trans and it bolted right up as you can see here the 4l80e has a stud type mount where the old transmission use 2 threaded holes.....after that I had to drill some new holes further back. Here is a pic of the 4l80e mount and then here is a pic of the modified crossmember, if you look close enough you can see where the old holes were....

Here are some pics of the headers...

In this pic you can see where I had to heat up the headers and give them a slight bend towards the motor to clear my lower control arm....and a engine bay shot of the driver side header clearance...

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r146/chevyguy7802/2.jpg

and using it for my oil pressure gauge that is in my truck already.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r146/chevyguy7802/23.jpg

I also turned my fuel rail around to the other side so routing the lines will be easier since my tank will be on the passenger side.....I also re-used the injector clips off my truck intake...Also I had to put a small bend on the fuel rail so the feed line would clear my coils...

flowmaster?

what did you do for transmission linkage? did you just use a floor shifter with universal cable?

3 inch true dual with force pro series mufflers(flowmaster knockoffs)
As for the transmission linkage, had to move the locater bracket for the shift rod further back on the frame and re-used everything that was on my truck and took the shift rod selector off the turbo 350 transmission that was in my truck and it transferred over directly to my 80e,I'll be sure to get pics of this for you guys!

Its running pretty good. Have been building a yard shed, so it has just recently gotten emptyed out. Thank God for the Big 10 springs! I had a whole wooden 10x16 shed in the bed ( less 16ft boards and prefab structure )

I finally got complete exhaust on it too. The thrush welded mufflers where just to loud, so I added a pair of cherry bomb's and a pair of 2.25" tail pipes behind each tire. Sounds nice.

My 86 has a LSX swap in the future still so I'll be hangin around in the future so it will be less painful when I do.

This past week I have been working on lowering it. 30 years 200K miles make ball joints not want to give up! I have had a heck of a time getting that done. Finally got the drivers side to give up, after using a pair of pickle forks. The rear end, I pulled out 3 springs and seemed to have gotten 2" drop out of it, I ordered a pair of 2" drop shackles from Summit to add. Other than that, mine's just been sitting, to much salt on the roads right now.

Spend the money on the fuel system and run braided lines if you can, what are you doing for a wiring harness? I went with a nelson and it was plug and play....had very few wires to wire into the truck!

i planned on going nelson on the harness and wheatley on the tune, just to keep things simple. Did you look into possibly running 2 87 model tanks with pumps and using the stock fuel lines and just adapting them at the engine instead of running all aftermarket fuel lines? That way you keep the same 2 tank setup?

Good deal, the nelson harness is top quality. I know there is a write up of it somewhere that street&performance did on a 73-87 ls1 swap with dual tanks, I may probably do it down the road sometime! If you ever have any questions dont hesitate to ask! If I find the link I'll pm it to you....

did you stick with the factory gauges, im thinking i wanna go autometer somewhere down the road but wanna stick to stock for now budget wise. I know the ect and oil pressure are both 3 wire sensors so you can use those plus the volt meter gauge you can wire to work, but your SOL on speed

Hey guys, I'm usually a lurker on here just reading and searching for information and never posting. However, this thread caught my eye, and I read the whole thing! Great looking trucks you guys have. I have a 1986 Stepside that I'm in the process of swapping in a 5.3/4L60E. Anyways, I saw in this thread you were looking for some specific information. I've done a ton of research, and book marked everything that I've found. I'll provide ya'll with some things that I have found.

I tried the switching valve with my '86 swap. I will tell you for sure, that switching valve won't hold up for very long. A small "drip" turned into fast flowing "run" after a few test runs. Those things are designed for 58 psi & under. If S&P used a "re-popped" valve, I doubt it will last long under LS requirements. If their valve handles greater than 60 psi, then they should definitely make that WELL-KNOWN for enthusiasts who will benefit. :judge:

chevyguy and bowtie, I wish I was next. I've been thinking about what to do with my truck before I ever got it. This is my first and only vehicle; bought it about five-or-so years ago, and I've run almost every option through my mind that I can think of; everything from a simple drop in replacement to a twin turbo LSx setup. My big thing is that I want functional power, more reliability and efficiency, thus why I've done a lot of thinking about doing a swap... not to mention the hot rod nature of it appeals to me as well. But if I ever swap out the motor -whether it's just a simple replacement or a 5.3 swap, etc- the whole drive train is getting replaced -motor to rear end. So, for now I'm good with watching everybody else, gathering info and ideas. But, if you know anyone who might want to help out a poor college student...

Hey just signed up... found what I needed in this thread. I just got an 86 shortbox 2wd with a cracked flywheel (not upset over that at all) I found a 6l gen 3 and this thread answered alot of my questions about the swap I was already planning. but a few that I still have (Im sure there will be alot more to come) are what did you guys do for engine mounts Buy or build? I also saw in 4wheel and offroad magazine that I may have to cut out the engine mount crossmember to make room for the power steering pump but from the pics that I have seen of all of you BEAUTIFUL trucks this looks like only a 4wd problem, does that sound right to you guys?

ThrottleHappy7

I just got an 86 shortbox 2wd with a cracked flywheel (not upset over that at all) I found a 6l gen 3 and this thread answered alot of my questions about the swap I was already planning. but a few that I still have (Im sure there will be alot more to come) are what did you guys do for engine mounts Buy or build? I also saw in 4wheel and offroad magazine that I may have to cut out the engine mount crossmember to make room for the power steering pump but from the pics that I have seen of all of you BEAUTIFUL trucks this looks like only a 4wd problem, does that sound right to you guys?

I made my own....I found the dimensions online and used them and the motor
fit perfect! I didnt have any fitment issues with the pump at all, im trying to remember what all is different up under a 4wd....if you ever have any questions feel free to ask!

I know it wasn't directed to me, but... if the day ever comes, I will.

Thanks for the welcome... I will get some pics up soon but I have a few more questions before I get started.... Has anyone made the AC fit or is there a relocation kit for that? The other question that I have is I am thinking that I will keep the 700r4 that is in the truck (modify that a little) but I was going to buy the Edelbrock efi to carb intake http://www.jegs.com/p/Edelbrock/755239/10002/-1 To make it a little less painfull for me. Has anyone done this yet and what will I be getting in to???

Do you mean the coolant pipe that runs across the heads? I have the pipe that goes across them and I plugged off the line that goes to the radiator.

I thought that had to be there to let air out? Your talking about the steam port that goes through the TB to the radiator right?

We are going to drill and tap the water pump housing right by the water neck, and put a 1/8 NPT, to 5/16's hose barb, and run it throught the TB.
