Default what is the spring in the fuel pump assembly

I am changing out my fuel pump and flipped over the housing and a spring came out... I was not smart enough to look in there before hand... But where does the spring go and what does it do?

If it's the long one it goes under one of the metal rods and holds the bottom portion of the assembly to the base of the tank.

I swear it has been the biggest PITA to change this thing out... Yeah it is the long spring and I figured it went under one of the rods... Does it matter which rod it goes under?

Mine had 3 springs: one on each rod. It's a 99-02 style though, so it could be different than your new style.

I think mine went in on the side between the pump and filter. I only had the one spring as well.
