So most of you have seen my truck go through its growth over the couple years, lowered 4wd 6.0, then I decided to swap to shock waves and get rid of the 4wd. Well 50miles later my transmission blew for the 4th time and I made a whole thread about that asshole.

April 2007
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/April%202007/April22_2007037.jpg
Well I made the decision to put it in the garage and build it to exactly what I wanted... which is where I stand now. I bought a 1999 RCSB for a daily drive, I own the black one so Im not building any credit there so this way I build a little credit and have a reliable truck. So the tear down begins...

A couple months have gone by and I have torn down my truck into every possible piece imaginable... I have decided that if Im going to do it, then Im going to do it right and do it ALL.

This truck I want to build to be simple and aggressive, my goal is to make it look like it was supposed to be like that, ie: instead of cups to space in a coil pocket, run a torsion setup so it looks like the truck was built for air.

Currently my plans are vaguely as followed...

From now till Spring 2010:
Rolling Chassis
- To be designed and fabricated by myself
- Factory suspension moved upwards to accommodate lower ride height
- Motor moved back and up to transfer weight and clear steering
- McGaughys Spindles, RideTech Control arms, and double adjustable shockwaves, Muscle Bar up front
- F9100s, double adjustable billet shocks, Satchell adjustable 4-link out back
- GM 14bolt 9.5” SF narrowed rearend
- Converted to 5x5 Lug Pattern
- Powder coated Hammered Black Satin finish, all components gloss black
- Custom Fuel Cell Behind rear end
- All fuel, air, and brake lines to be hard stainless, with braided to moving parts
- Intro Wheels GT Sports 20x8.5 Front w/ Toyo Proxy STII 275/40/R20
- Intro Wheels GT Sports 20x15 Rear w/ MT Sportsman SR 29x18x20
- Wilwood 16” Front Rotors 6 piston calipers
- Wilwood 14” Rear Rotors 4 piston calipers
- GM HD Hydroboost Brake System
Exterior
- Water based True Black w/ blue toner
- Ceramic Clear Coat (same as new Mercedes)
- Body dropped bed 5.5” to hide all suspension components and appear “stock”
- Stock Wheel tubs widened to accommodate 20x15s, again to appear “stock”
- Rear tailgate will close and open to appear "stock"
- Shaved tailgate, license plate, candied and smoked tail lights
- Exhaust tips through the roll pan to mimic the front bumper
- Escalade Handles
- Cal-Vu Mirrors
- Front bumper is a modified SS bumper
- Hood will be raised across the whole back
- Xenarc Headlights with 4300k HIDs
- Clear Marker Lenses
Interior
- All plastic panels will be dyed black, factory satin finish.
- Escalade top dash pad, wood grain on passenger side to be painted black, and “Cadillac” replaced by “SCHEVY”
- Escalade Dash Bezel
- 03 Console w/ T56 shifter while retaining cup holders.
- Black headliner, and visors to match
- Black Carpeting
- Modified Stock Bucket seats, reworked into more of a “race bucket”
- Denali Gauges, all interior dash lights to be orange (only color on whole truck, while the rest is black and billet)
- Sounds system is TBA, but amp will be hidden along with two 10”shallow mount subwoofers behind each seat.
Drivetrain
- 402 CI LQ4 Specs TBA Est. HP 750rwhp
- Custom Turbo Kit by TurboDan Single S85mm all stainless tubular headers, complete one off kit.
- T56 6 Speed Transmission
- 4.88 gears w/ Detroit Locker in the 14-bolt
- Exact Specs TBA on complete drivetrain

Now for pictures...

What are you going to use to coat/seal the frame? POR 15?? IMO I would use eastwoods products and undercoating setup. That is what I am using on my stang and on a previous build and after 4 years the rust never came back.

Did you look into Eastwoods Rust Encaspulator? I have used it and I liked it. Then Chassis black on top of that.

Well for now it will be very streetable, but after this stage a bigger motor will go in and it will be well over 700hp... so a mix I guess you could say.

Yes I was planning on using it.

Only way to do it right and complete imo. I want it to be perfect no cut corners anywhere... so Im shooting for end of summer to have it close, and then Ill build a new motor and just rock the 6.0 for the time being.

Damn, now thats dedication.
Oh yes haha.... lots of time.

Well back to work this weekend, since its really my only free time.

Got the frame back from the sandblaster. Upside down to do some work, makes it easier this way.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/CIMG1894.jpg

Here is the primer for the eastwood chassis black, im painting the frame with.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/CIMG1892.jpg

Hangs WAY too low to lay out...
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/CIMG1895.jpg

Mount is cut
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/CIMG1896.jpg

Notice the stitch welds... cut each off
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/CIMG1898.jpg

Separated
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/CIMG1901.jpg

Cut it down so it was 2 1/8" wide on the ends... works out perfect.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/CIMG1903.jpg

Welded back up
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/CIMG1905.jpg

and primed ready to be smoothed and painted
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/CIMG1910.jpg

Next was to level off the frame... after it was flipped back over of course.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/CIMG1911.jpg

2.5" from the floor, 30" tire, 3.5" axle (14bolt) room for 1" bump stop sounds good to me
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/CIMG1914.jpg

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/CIMG1918.jpg

Why would they make the frame NOT straight?
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/CIMG1920.jpg

much better
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/CIMG1926.jpg

Overlap?
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/CIMG1923.jpg

No!
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/CIMG1924.jpg

Both sides welded on top cut to be flush on both sides unlike how alot will overhand the edges, I hate that.

I haven't installed the bottom one I need to weld a nut on it to be able to screw in a bump stop but I wanted to make sure its the right size so I can vary different bump stops.

I should have my arms soon. I also had to send SD my brackets back since the 14bolt (after thought) is bigger than the 10bolt axle tubes. Once I get those back Ill start hanging my rear end, then narrowing. Along with dropping done my body mounts.

Looking good, nice welds. Just a suggestions on steel that thick (looks like 1/8) to angle the edges that touch each other to allow for better pentration...Making a \/ instead of a ||... Other wise when you grind it smooth your basically grinding off all the connecting material.

thats man, that is what I did tho a \/ pattern, maybe not enough. Thats for the input guys. Appreciate the help always love learning new things. I was having trouble welding from bottom to top, could keep a steady bead and a buddy stopped by when i was about done and showed be the best way. So thats cool. But the ones I did seemed to penetrate quite well imo.

Quik

whats your point for dropping the bodymounts? are you dropping the body over the frame? wouldnt that be more for show then anything for performance?

GMracer
10-30-2007, 06:05 AM
well yes its for the look, im going old school and channeling it. Not completly laying to the rockers but just a little lower than normal, and different. Its not just being built for all go and no show, got to have a mix of both

GMracer
10-30-2007, 06:19 AM
basically I hate how the frame hangs below the body, so this way the frame only hangs below 3/4" instead of 2 3/4" i know you're not big into this aspect of customizing, (real low to the ground, bags ect) but I building my truck for more than just performance. Otherwise I would have done coilovers and been a strict track truck

GMracer
10-30-2007, 08:37 AM
yea it is alot of work, but I know in the end the final product will be off the hook, so Im keeping a positive outlook on everything. I hope this weekend I can get the rest of the fab work done or close to it. basically everything but the pan hard, Ill order that next week so I can make sure I can order it to perfect length.

Going to be ordering my torsion brackets for the bags up front this week, along with a new paint gun and the final paint for the frame. After that I need to send my 14bolt out to be narrowed. Then bodywork will start and wheels will come hopefully soon.

GMracer

what are you going to do for the trans and motor? our tunnels arent big enough to accept 2" without interferences. so yourll be raising the entire floor of the truck? how about the fire wall, a radix or truck intake wont clear in there being dropped 2"

GMracer
10-30-2007, 12:44 PM
the firewall is fine, i could fit the intake with 3" theres alot more room than you think. no Im not raising the whole floor, thatd defeat the purpose of dropping the mounts, instead Ill just raise the tunnel a little bit. But I wont do that till I have the 80e to fit accordingly. If I had the stock tank evap abs ect Id have to clear for that but I dont. Youll see it as I progress

its called channeling, old school did it. above the frame will be small sheetmetal channels usually 1" when u lay rocker so I may only need a VERY small channel above the frame only in front of the seats, you want ever notice it. and the trans tunnel is a deff. not that much, if you go to gmfs and to street section and click how to channel it explains it

Any thoughts about switching to 5-lug? Better wheel selection, and nobody has done a write up yet. hint hint.

GMracer
10-30-2007, 09:25 PM
yes I have thought about doing a 5lug setup. My wheels will be custom made anyway. My rearend needs to be shortened and axles anyway, up front Id probably just weld up the holes on the hubs and have the redrilled.

quik, its not to bad since Im eliminating alot of stuff, including the stock tank. Otherwise you need to raise the area above that, the tranny and trim stuff to other little stuff along with the channels. Also due to the fact Im on air, I will need to tub my firewall, moving fusebox ect... but since Im not going to have that stuff under the hood it helps out.

seriously, seems alot of things would be in the way. You seem to have a damn good handle on a plan of attack. Did you do alot of research before undertaking this amazing ordeal? measuring twice? Kick ass though, even if you run into problems you certainly are showing the skills to get done what you need to...get er done! I think this is amazing and pics just don't do it justice. It takes alot more skills than swingin a hammer to do what your doing. COngrats and good luck.

Funny thing is, I do swing a hammer, carpenter by trade. Ive been doing research on everything I have planned since I got into this scene. Here is a link... its not that bad really to channel... Also measure twice, or three times

yea Im not done with it. its really only for the radiator support anyway. But it still strong, people have been doin this (channeling) for years. If I were to even hit anything ( i hope not) that little section of frame is the last thing Im going to worry about.

I dont want to drop the crossmembner it looks too sweet flush mounted, I could flip and add spacers, but I think Im going to go with a new bracket thats built perfectly to fit it. I dont want spacers, I want this truck to be built like it was supposed to be that way, if that makes any sense, haha. Thanks for the idea tho

I moved this to the drivetrain section. Lots of reasons it could be in here.
Chassis | Transmission| Driveshaft | Gears/Rear End/Differential | Traction Aids

As far as people not posting, over 1200 have viewed. A build thread usually doesn't get tons of posts in it as most people lurk to follow the build. Grippy's doesn't count for comparison unless you polish and plate that whole frame and take a pic of each weld bead and step (ofcourse quadroupling your build time taking pics and uploading) :jest:

Highly highly impressive man, you are obviously a very multi-talented carpenter.

Boxed up with 1/8" plate like the rest of the frame. On this part of the frame I had to bend a L-piece since the top part of the frame is not as wide as the bottom, if I thought ahead when i did my notch I could've cut and made it uniform, o well.

BTW IMO you really don't need to use 3/16 for that rear crossmember, 1/8 box would do just fine, not to mention you need a really heavy duty welder (stick, A mig maybe if prepped properly) to even get good pentration on 3/16..... I used all 1/8 on the chasis of my mustang.... Everyone on pro-touring.net said 1/8 was plenty...

Take care of your self and take it easy. My father worked in his family's cabinet shop for a long time, and I think he has tried to cut off his thumbs like 3 times on a table saw. Needless to say he has zero feeling in both of them..... His brother cut off 3 of his fingers here recently and he has them sitting in a jar on his desk (nasty freak).... Both of them worked in that cabinet shop since they were like 10.... Mistakes happen....

Ouch... I cut my index finger open across the nuckle at work almost 3 mo ago ( 9/10/07) and it is still healing... Still Trying to get all the movement back. It toke almost 2 months to be able to bend it 90 degres on with its own power... Talk about bad accedints. :bang: I Even got before surgury and after surgury pictures... I just went back for my check up and I told them there was some discomfort around this little bump near the scare... Guess what, there is still some foreign material in there and if the discomfort does not go away on its own they will have to go in and remove whats left....

I did it on a Water Jet machine... at the time it felt like a Jacuzi jet afterward was another story. The pain was intensified by all the Garnet that was injected into my finger... I can only imagine What his finger felt like.

I smashed a finger once with of all things a hammer. got caught under the handle when it sliped off the peice I was working on. It created a blood pocket under the nail and the pain was So intense it made me sick :barf: , untill they burned 2 holes to relive the presure. The blood squirted out almost to the ceiling in the doctors office. and almost got him in the face...

About damn time I get back to work!

First off my fingers, I finally got the doc. to give me a smaller set of splints, so I can fit them into a glove, little tight and uncomfortable but hey I need to get this thing done... I put a rubber glove on first to keep them protected by the way.

Cut the 1/4" think 1" DOM Tubing
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/IMG_2571.jpg

Only place it really scares me... but it never touches the frame unless its all the way laid out and its not really a scrub it just a tap kind of touch, but since that is just extra metal from the bump stop or whatever I can grind out enough clearance.

Ok but doesn't the rear portion of the bed sit on the frame... And if you moved all the body mounts down for a Boby drop, how will you align the bed??? Thats what I was trying to figure out...

GMracer
01-02-2008, 11:28 AM
Oh I understand what you're asking now well the actual bed floor gets raised 2", which in turn lowers the bed sides to match, but since I have that notch I'm actually raising it even more to go right over the notch. So it'll appear to be a stock bed floor just not as deep

Ah Ha... Ya I wasn't sure what you were going to do there... some guys make custom floors and others just leave it kinda open... Just didn't want to see you go through all the trouble and then crap out on the last part... I hate seeing guys do that out here... they spend a ton of money to get the work done and the bed usually ends up being the crappy part...

So I took out the measure tape and squares, and spent over an hour trying to figure out how much to narrow this thing and decide on my wheel BS....

Plan was to get 20x10s with 3.75"
well I can't :bawl:

If I did I wouldn't have enough room to put the nuts on the 4-link due to the back of the ebrake drum. So I tried a little more BS, but still no because of the ebrake cable the way it pulls the lever to engage would hit the 4link bracket. So I opted for 2.25" narrow and I'll do 5" BS. Makes me kind of upset and wishing I did things a little differently but I guess there's always next time... right?

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j312/GMracer313/Silverado/Complete%20Resto/IMG_2725.jpg

Now not only am I having it narrowed, but the brake plate will have to be relocated this will allow me to run factory 10bolt disc brakes instead of keeping the 14bolts drum brakes.

Wow i didn't even catch that you were going to use a 14 bolt... Why not just build a 9 inch or something like that???

SBTork
01-04-2008, 07:14 PM
Oh I understand what you're asking now well the actual bed floor gets raised 2", which in turn lowers the bed sides to match, but since I have that notch I'm actually raising it even more to go right over the notch. So it'll appear to be a stock bed floor just not as deep

that's the best way of doing it. This thread is great :chug:

I think that 9 inch would be a better idea than a 14 bolt. I know keep it GM, but I would rather keep it moving than sitting there with a broken rear end.

So my frame is basically 99% done, all that's left is DAing the frame smooth and shock mounts... but until I pick up some temporary shocks to match my huge money shocks I'm done with the frame.

Wednesday I bring my frame over to my body guy to put on his machine to make sure nothing tweaked from the welding and grinding.

Once I get the frame back from the shop I'll DA and get ready to prime and prep for paint. Should be dropping the cab in the next week or so, need to get my rear end and axle too.

But if you look at my setup, you see the fuel cell frame and not much room beside it, now where the stock tank was I plan on running a 5 gallon air tank against the frame on both sides, then my drive shaft in the middle of course, then I need to fit 2 3" exhaust pipes, then up between my notch and axle (keeping clear of my bags) back down and beside my cell... why not just dump it? Well stay tuned and see.

Really, I use it for the exact opposite, I mainly use it for finishing thinner sheet metal... I don't like using the solid one piece cause I had one come apart and stick in the wall.... To each his own..

actually now that I think of it, I only used the flap on a 4.5" I'm going to try on the 9"/7" yea basically all mine came apart since I was using a 9" disc with 7" backing plate... luckily no injuries... things are finicky since it didn't take much to blow them. I'll try these out on the big one

Haven't had that happen... but I did have a fitting blow off. Thankfully I was wearing a face sheild at the time cause it probally would have put a big gash in face if I wasn't.. It was some one else grinder and the fitting on both the hose and the tool were old and worn out. Needles to say we had all new fittings in are stall after that... if they leak or stick I chuckem in the trash. There less then $5 a peice and that is cheaper then going to the hospital. They usually dont break that often .

awesome! I read back through the thread and you said on one of your welds you stressed the joints and inspected and repaired any cracks. A) how did you stress the joints and B) did you red dye teh welds to find the cracks? Did you do any stress relief to the frame after you did all that welding? If not that's pretty awesome that the frame didn't move too much, I guess they have enough of the stifness designed in to keep it from moving.

well like I said I'm not a fabricator by trade so I basically just welded it solid and then when I ground it done I hit the edges with a hammer pretty good showing any fine cracks and re-welded making sure it penetrating real good then did it again... I basically welded ground it down then filled in low spots grind again then at least one sometime two more passes till it was perfectly flat and no cracks or pin holes.
So I guess no to the red dye thing... and I'm not sure what you mean stress relief? Next time I do this I plan to have a frame table... and I want to build more of it instead of changing something that was already designed and built. But this will do for now on my first frame up.
I'm happy it didn't move much too, means less I have to worry about~!

Great work!!! Congrats on the frame being staight, that amount of heat on can warp things pretty good.

As long as you prepped the edges properly you should not have any problems. What I mean about prep is grinding the edges to 45* so the connecting pieces look like a

___/\___

then butt the two pieces together, wipe down with acetone, then fill the valley with weld. That is how I was taught when I worked at a body shop when we did frame repairs....

building stuff like that is fun isn't it!!!

Curious on what the Eastwood recomends as far as final prep before applying both products??? I would figure an 80 grit on a DA would be good for manicanical adhesion. I use an epoxy primer and with my experiance the finer you go the less mechanical adhesion you end up with...

GMracer
01-21-2008, 12:54 PM
I remember reading about it, I'll have to check again. I used 80 then 180 on my frame but could always scuff it back up.

BlackGMC
01-21-2008, 01:06 PM
I read an article awhile back that said POR-15 and Rust Encapsulator actually work better and adhere better if there is a little rust on the metal... Because both products actually adhere to rust, they are designed to be put on top of rust and prevent it from spreading... If the metal is bare and rust free, a good self-etching primer is a good thing to use....

I remember reading about it, I'll have to check again. I used 80 then 180 on my frame but could always scuff it back up. Just curious thats all. The product I use says you can use 80 or 150 grit but I have had better adhesion on a DA with 80 grit How ever I have never expermented with different types of sanding methods... Some Da's have a wider pattern and are more agressive while others are finer for doing that finish work. I am curious to see if I used a soft pad on a 7/9 inch grinder with 150 or a even on a long board how it would fair up. also i should test the diffrence between a close pattern DA and a more agressive wider pattern DA.

For those of you who are not sure what i am talking about DA's have a ratted swirl pattern wich I believe are usually 3/16, 1/8, and 3/8

Let me know what you find out about your product...
Thanks

Looks like a propane heater of some sort...

yea, sorry it's a propane heater to heat my garage since it's freezing out there... this way I can work at home too!

very good to have at home since my garage is FREEZING! so now I can do stuff to other parts of the project instead of the frame also.

well worked in the garage a little more today, I think my done date is going to be pushed back... you see by the end of the post.

Fired up that heater and holy crap, I could work out in shorts even on low so I had to turn it on and off to retain good heat.

Since I'm removing the AC I need to plug up all the stuff that comes with it, so I don't need this anymore

I plugged that hole up with some plastic I had laying around, then I plugged the big hole that goes into the engine bay for the AC lines

This is why I may push the date back, I was going to just put the motor in and drive with a stock 6.0 till I build my new motor, but have everything done... now I'm thinking I'll build this one up at least somewhat.

naw I was kinding of being sarcastic, but oh well I know it's pretty good, well my motor build will come later, I'm just going to freshen this thing up a little bit make it look good and then build my new one on the side so I can drive this thing asap, so don't worry guys!

Goal for new motor though is 700+hp
